Liz Wilkie cdo@ilfraocmbe.qld.gov.au January 08, 2002 The Isisford Shire Council in Central Western Queensland are hosting a Fishing Festival and Competition July 13 & 14, to co-incide with the Year of the Outback celebrations. Isisford is located on the banks of the mighty Barcoo river (Banjo Patterson referred to the Barcoo in the "Bush Christening"). Fishing predominately for Yellow Belly, Jew or Cat fish and Black Bream, the river is well stocked and has had several fresh runs throughout the year. Camping is free, and the town has plenty of amenities including two hotels & caravan park, swimming pool, shops etc. Bitumen road from the Matilda (Landsborough Highway). Prize pool (to date) is $4,000.00 and growing. This is the first time that Isisford has hosted a Fishing competition, and we envisage that this will become an annual event. In addition to the great fishing and hospitality, there will be BBQ's and music and PUB CRAWLS throughout the weekend. Entry to the competition can be made on the day, or by phoning the Isisford Shire Council on 4658 8900 (07) or writing to the Isisford Shire Council, St. Mary's STreet, Isisford or email isisfsc@tpg.com.au. Could you please pass this along to your fellow members and or include it in your newsletter, we can be assured of a great time. Kids are not only welcome, but encouraged. Isisford is a small community with a high emphasis on families having a good time. We have many reservation for the first months of 2002. Guest from last year, also some of their friends, and new people who wish to experiment our “World Clas Fishing Adventures in Unique Jungle Scenery…” We organized 4 fishing expedition in November , fishing has been on our grounds of San Juan River in Nicaragua., Solentiname Archipelago on Nicaragua Lake, and Down San Juan River to El Castillo, also a few fishing in Rio Frio and Cano Negro in Costa Rica So several trips in the last weeks… We fish Four days with Robert and Georges From Usa Then 9 days with Gerard and Pascal from France then another 9 days with Emile and Louis also from France I am coming back to day from a 6 day trip with Georges and Jean from USA At the beginning of Month of November Huricane Michelle pass in the Caribean affecting Honduras and also the northern part of Nicaragua… We are fishing the San Juan River witch is located far in the southern part of Nicaragua I never could imagine than this Huricane could affect so much our Fishing… last year in November fishing has been great,,, but it’s a fact than this year Hurricane did change the weather, so behaviour of fish In our trip with Robert and Georges we had less tarpon hits than usual and a bad fishing ( for 2 days ) concerning Rainbow bass in the archipelago of Solentiname. When we arrived there we notice than the water of the lake was Colour White and the wind coming from opposite direction as usual . according to local advise “This is totally unusual but may happen once a year.” It was due to the Huricane . we even notice than the local FISHERMEN WHERE NOT FISHING. Well we try and definitely fishing has been poor, only a few fish, Wapote and no Rainbow…Meanwhile in that trip we had some Tarpon hits in San Juan River …a 150lb to the boat In the Folowing trip with Gerard and Pascal, ( 8 days Fishing ) the situation return to normal for Rainbow bass, wapote Mojarra meaning we did catch many of these fish around Solentiname… but concerning Tarpon it did remain poor , only a few of them..100 to 150lb… we have been very far from our usual 10 to 20 hit per day…I also report the catch of several good size snook ( normal at this time of the year ) among them a very nice 30lb+ and a lost of another one even bigger…, we also had some Gar , Folowing trip with Emile and Louis ( 8 days Fishing ) we had almost the same situation , few tarpon but also very good fishing in Solentiname for Rainbow bass , also good fishing for gars and only a few Tarpon hits in Rio Frio in Costa Rica… So globally for us an unusual situation Tarpon were around but not so many and they definitely where not feeding… In our last trip with Georges and Jean The situation change totally and went back to normal meaning a lot of Tarpon hits, several to the boat, Georges wanted to catch Tarpon but also different fish so we stop fishing for Tarpon , went to Solentiname where we had Many Rainbow bass , Wapote, Mojara…etc.. But what did Happen to our fishing?? Possible Explanation Concerning Rainbow bass in Solentiname ( Only 2 days with no Rainbow bass ) no doubt reason has been the passing of the Huricane, witch bring in Strange Winds…once the wind did turn again the situation came back to normal and we had very good fishing .But for Tarpon? For three weeks Weather was strange , no sun a lot of Cloud but almost no rain This may have been the reason,. Also in my inquiries with Local people , and well known professional Tarpon Fishermen in Central America all of them told me than “ it might have been the breeding time…and when this time come Fish do not feed for around three weeks the only attack will come from bad tempered tarpon than our lures do disturb…“ So far I sincerely do not know what happened but will go on with my investigation. If any readers Know about the breeding time of Tarpon please let me know… Anyway we have been far from our usual 10 to 20 Tarpon hits per day… Fortunately everything went back to normal in our last trip…With the new moon weather did change again now we have sun , a few rain then sun , the habitual weather we like… so I have no doubts than everything is going to be normal for the weeks coming… Philippe Tisseaux SAN CARLOS SPORTFISHING E mail cecnasa@racsa.co.cr Web Page http://www.marine-electronics.net/tropicalfishing/ Photos Albums: http://communities.msn.com/tarponfishing&naventryid=100 Fishing Reports: http://pub25.ezboard.com/ftarponfrm1 Special page on Solentiname: http://solentiname1.tripod.com/solentiname/ al burmett BURNETT.@xtra.co.nz December 01, 2001 Looking at moving to Napier next year and will be looking for work in the fishing industry.I have been filleting for the last 14 years and a keen fisherman. looking for work either on a charter boat, or in a fish factory so if any one wants to give a keen fisherman a chance please e-mail me thanks.. Philippe Tisseaux cecnasa@racsa.co.cr September 23, 2001 TARPON FISHING TOURNAMENT IN NICARAGUA. San Carlos Sportfishing Fishing report # 20 On the 13th and 14th of September has been held the 41th edition of the annual Tarpon fishing turnament in San Carlos Nicaragua. The first one has been organized in 1955 with interuption during the bad days time in Nicaragua We compete aboard my boat ‘Julia Brava” In this trip were participating my friends Bob Church from Canada , and Larry Hustler from USA , also my guides Augusto ,Walter, and Juan. … a good team as Bob is a very experience fisherman, Larry is very known in our fishing world, he is one of the pioneer of Sportfishing in Costa Rica…where he live since 26 years…For so many year so many people have been fishing aboard his boats from Quepos…like me he do not like so much to run an operation in a place witch is getting too busy so now he own a jungle camp on a seclude beach in Drake Bay.. We compete and did win as the new champion of San Juan river for tarpon, is Mr Larry Hustler we could not make it from a few pounds for the biggest fish but did win for number of tarpon and accumulated weight…( We also did fish two hours the day before the Tournament and Lary released a 140lb ) unfortunately only small 80lb in boat during turnament days…Why??.. Well we also had several “No doubts tournament winners “ on line in these days lost during the fight…Especifically one than I did lost at the boat doing a major mistake as I made it to fast as a boat was coming on us etc etc ….well anyway sorry for the Team aboard… The condition where very different from my usual fishing…Normally there is no other boat on the river than Julia Brava. On these two days there where around 30 boats competing some very small some very big , some with rustic outfit some with the ultimate available tackles. From 12 footer with 10 hp to the ultimate Boston whealer Bertram and Co style with 500hp..these big yachts where coming from Rivas and Granada crusing the entire lake. Anyway we had a fantastic time, a unique experience competing with all these guys.. What’s fun is than on these day the entire town is dedicated to the tournament..I mean for example than our plan for first fishing day was to wake up at 5 am but at 4.30 there was already a band walking on everywhere in town in order to wake up every body…not only fishermen, all town a major mess ( Town is more than 10 000 people ) We wanted to rest a bit as the night before there was a major party for the election of the Tournament Queen it was suppose to start at 7pm but nobody there so we went dinner came back and around 10pm all did start in a crowded place during the two days around 1000 persons where waiting all day at the pier dancing, with bands, drinking …to see the fish weighted. As soon as a fish was weighted it was disappearing, the guy from the comity where asking us: “ do you want to give this one to Hospital, or poor people, or the Army, to the jail? , we turn back a minute and then fish gone……,at night on day one was a major Dance with 1000 persons…I could not get in.. and then a final Party for giving the trophy an over crowded place with a travesty show, Delirious.. a lot of dance etc.., I have been fishing many tournaments, I never experience such a thing a lot of activity, a lot of fun… For the fun part all has been much more than what I could ever think off, concerning the competition in itself it is very strange, The Fishing organization is very special as there where two different comities, as the balance where far from being exact, as we still wonder what were the exact rules…Well with Julia brava we always fish strictly according to IGFA …but it seems than here only a few people understanding what this mean…Also we always Catch and release..but on these days we obey the orders of the comity we did enter. So simple rules what count is the biggest fish and the guy who catch the more tarpon…so CONGRATULATION TO LARRY AND DON HENRY SANDINO and thanks to my staff. I am very short in English to describe this so warm so friendly atmosphere I am going to ask Bob and Larry to describe what they saw because really this morning it is like if I have been dreaming for three days… it’s been so different from our usual experience… What I know is than definitely I will do it next year , I will not miss next tournament even if from a fishing ethical point of view all this is far from my ideas… There are so many persons who have been fishing with me this year than I would have love to be with us…to enjoy that…Sincerely I have been thinking, talking probably of all of you with Augusto ….and if Jeff had been here…and Terry , and Lars..and..Alan, and Dave, Sam. Doug , Gaele, Etienne , Niko, Haldvan, Joyce, Peter, Julie, Fabien, Andre… Sorry I stop but for sure a special thought for you Paul. ( Was not the day to use 10lb…) I am back in San Jose , Augusto did already call me, everything is back to normal so in the coming weeks we are going to enjoy our usual world class fishing in unique Jungle Scenery… A major events for the entire world community did happen three days before this Turnament,, there is no words to describe our feeling except Pain a lot of pain . What I wish to be known is than here , in our so far away Jungle. even with this giant party around a lot of these Nicaraguan people, some very rich some extremely poor where totally concern and condemning thisact. IT is inconceivable to me,that anyone group of people can believe, the attack on the United States is justifiable. I heard on the news one man make the statement, that we are know different than the people in the United States.or no different than you are.Well I am here to tell you there is a great distinction between us, and them. Coward's,and terrorist, hide behind women and children,as a means of protecting themselves,or placing women and children in and around buildings or structures, as a means to protect them, knowing full well, they are targeted to be bombed, and we would never allow the dragging of dead bodies through ours streets, let alone, let children help. we would not teach our children, this type of immoral behavior, nor could I believe any, civilized people with a conscience condone such atrocity till now.Neither can I believe, that we in the United States would deliberately, send people to a foreign country, not! to destroy a military base, base of operations, or terrorist group of people threatening them, or something on that line, But for the sold purpose, of destroying a city, and killing as many innocent men women, and children, as possible. The person, who may the statement, we are know different or just like you, must of been, drunk, brain washed,or on some type of drug. IT is inconceivable to me, that one person,or persons could brain washed,so many people into believing that this type of action would be justifiable or even excepted by the world. I would like to believe, that these people were drug and brain washed, into committing suicide, and taking as many people with them as possible, although this may be possible, I don't believe this is the case ,but I do! believe there are people out there in the world, who are, week minded, easily swayed, and brain washed, into believing almost anything, and they have a need to believe in something, and I believe the person or persons, directly responsible, for the attack on the United States, know this too,They will not get their hands dirty, when they can easily brain wash such people into doing it for them.they are now dead and will never know the pain and sorrow they have brought on a city of innocent people, but guess who is still here, the purer evil. I don't know what God or beliefst these people have, unless it be Satan himself, I! know of no believes that would condone such terrorism. nor do I know of any civilized country that would condone this type of terrorism until now.so with that said. Here's the way I see it. You have attacked us because, supposedly we deliberately attacked you without warning or provocation and killed innocent people mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters. so you have sought revenge on us,but now we are in your shoes,so we seek, revenge, because you have attacked us without warning or provocation, and killed innocent people mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters.so now you're in our shoes,so you seek revenge, and killed more of our brothers and sisters mothers and fathers, and now we seek revenge and killed more of your brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers, and now you seek revenge and killed more of our brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers now we seek revenge and killed more of your brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers, and now you seek revenge and killed more of our brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers now we seek revenge and killed more of your brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers, and now you seek revenge and killed more of our brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers. By now I hope someone has seen the Paradox of this type of thinking, this could drag on like this for years and years so, let's just forget about all the back and forth bullshit, turn the dam keys, push the red buttons, and blow the hell out of the world and each other. Hell, the way I see it, we have tens of thousands, of nuclear bombs, and a hundred, or more, nuclear bombs, alt to pretty much make the whole world inhabitable, for about 10,000 years or more.I guess we built so many, because we thought we may have to take a few galaxies with us. better yet lets just turn all our biological weapons lose .at least the world could be inhabited by, what ever survived.who knows,it could be a whole new breed of nonviolent people in nature. like that would ever happened. the odds are if anything survived, they would destroy whatever was left,to get revenge, even if it meant getting killed themselves, we've just seen it. Revenge,at any cost. So now it's our turn, to retaliate, and to what end do we go,Do we lower our moral values and our sense of right and wrong,as they have done,in older to accomplish a gold. Do we retaliate at any cost. One things for sure,if it keeps moving forward like it is,I'll have my answer. 9/14/01 Fred salelea@xtra.co.nz September 12, 2001 Auckland, Onehunga large room to rent close to transport, shopping mall, schools, $100pw WildTop info@wildtop.com September 09, 2001 Announcement of New Product; Combination Amphibious Boat/Car Roof Top Storage WildTop is a combination amphibious boat and car top storage made by injection molded fiberglass in RTM process. We drop the luggage at Hotel Leykos and fishing did start around 11 am . Fishing as been for two full days as on the 23 we also fished for 3 additional hours. I could not be part of the trip this report is done with the information given to me By Augusto my guide and guest Tom Kennedy In total we report 15 tarpons Hooked 7 or 8 to the boat the biggest around 150lb...also some gars, and a big turtle..!!!??? .Fishing has only been on trolling, Tom suggest us for the future to also fish drifting down Rio San Juan with live bait on a float...For sure we are going to try it again ...We did it successfully in the past using Circle hooks and a relatively Big Sardina or small mojara or Machaca hooked by the mouth... with a float or nothing...This technique is very efficient but only if the tarpon are active ( feeding ) ...If not the lures are better because their vibration do make the tarpon nervous so it will attack this intruder on it’s rest territory.. The only negative point in that trip is than we could not eat any River scrimps as their fishing by local people was a total disaster during these days...Nor a single one in town or in our usual stop in the jungle rivers... NICARAGUA FISHING Report # 18 3 day fishing/exploring on San Juan River August 3 to 6 That time hour guests Julie and Fabien from France came by San Jose Costa Rica so we drove to Los Chiles ..their goal was a few fishing and a lot of discovery... Jungle scenery, exuberant vegetation, birds, Wild life .meanwhile Julie had her tarpon 150 lb after a 1 hour fight on 30lb and Fabien had a 200lb and a 130lb also some gars...Fabien did surprise us a lot because he has his two tarpon release in less than 15 mn... one of them was a 200lb??? He confess than he is far from being an experimented angler...he did not put a lot of pressure on the line but Still!! I Wonder? He was fishing on 40lb but?? I also took a small one 80lb on 30lb as I wanted to experiment a new tonic for the next fishing Tournament to be held on the 12/13/14 of September...result has been Ok as in three minutes tarpon was to the boat...and released. The most pleasant part of the trip for these guest is than we went down river to El Castillo where we did stay for a night.... Hotel is very beautiful there overlooking the river from the balcony of the room you can see the tarpon jumping in the rapids...while having a nice breakfast on white tablecloth . The village is small 300 habitants, it is very clean , very typical there is a very good restaurant...The fortress above the hill is in perfect shape ,the view over san Juan river fantastic...Really a nice hide away.. and a good fishing spot...we will be back there regularly in the coming month specifically for Snook fishing as the season is from September till January/February ...We did not fish for tarpon but they are abundant...problem is than it will be difficult to go lighter than 40lb there due to the presence of the rapids down river...so Dangerous. we will find a solution probably by fishing a miles or two up river... Also the good news is than River Scrimps are back in San Carlos we had them for dinner...Better than lobster said Julie and she is an expert has she lived long in the Caribbean Islands of St Martin and St Barth... Julie and Fabien left from San Carlos for Granada using the line ferry a long trip but with stops in Solentiname and Omotepe... Airplane is only 50 mn... NICARAGUA FISHING Report # 19 Fishing on the 7th 8th,9th of August. Our guest came from Granada where they where staying at Hotel Colonial. We received them on the 7th at the airport of San Carlos.5 persons came Lars Andersen, his son Eugene of 14 year old , his wife Maria, Martin Taylor and Brandon Bush so we had to use two boats ..Obviously Julia Brava and a local covered boat more comfortable for the lady than my open sportfishing style boat but this boat did not offer the fishing comfort of Julia Brava…the top was a big problem.. Well we had a lot of tarpon on line , several has been released to the boat... size as usual 100/150lb also Eugene the son of Lars took a very big gar 70/80lb. The main events of that trip is than Lars Andersen Fishing with Augusto my guide aboard Julia Brava had a monster on line .we figure around 300lb..on 30lb .( AUGUSTO HAD A LOT OF TARPON IN HIS LIFE HE IS 40 YEARS OLD , BORN ON THE RIVER BANKS HE PERFECTLY KNOWS HOW MUCH A TARPON CAN WEIGHT WE ALREADY HAD SEVERAL OVER 200LB....) ) Guests also saw the fish ...on line only 1 minutes one or two jumps and Line 30lb broke as the spool of the reels did turn to fast so a mess of line in the reels...the brake was on, Alarm was on but this fish was really to powerful that day on that rod…......Well next time but what a pity..... Prediction for the coming weeks....THE GOOD NEW IS ALSO THAN WE CAUGHT OUR FIRST “CALVA” ...NOT BIG BUT THIS IS OUR FIRST SNOOK OF THE NEW SEASON....USELY SEASON START IN SEPTEMBER TILL JANUARY FEBRUARY... So I figure the snook season is going to be great as well down in El Castillo , in front of San Carlos ..or on the shore of the great lakes.. For the tarpon I do not worry they will be there.. Gar fishing will be as usual...Also no problem for Rainbow bass fishing around the Solentiname Archipelago... I invite all reader interested to share our fishing expedition to be in touch with me rapidly as I wish to organize my planning from now till the end of February... I have many weeks available but also already have several reservations so in the months coming I will mostly be fishing and it is going to be more difficult to set up additional trip or get in touch with me... PS IS THERE ANYONE INTERESTED TO JOIN FOR THE LOCAL TARPON SNOOK FISHING TURNAMENT IN SAN CARLOS??? around 20 boats will compete on the 12/13/14/15 of September Philippe Tisseaux Email cecnasa@racsa.co.cr Web page: http://www.marine-electronics.net/tropicalfishing/ Preceding fishing reports ( 16 of them ) at: http://pub25.ezboard.com/btarpon Dave david.barrett@treetech.co.nz August 16, 2001 Amale duck is a drake, what do you call a female duck? The luxuriance got into his note-book." "Dark grottos, fairy festoons, tunnels, temples, columns, pillars, towers, pilasters, terraces, pyramids, mounds, domes, walls, in endless confusion of vine-work -- no shape known to architecture unimitated -- and all so webbed together that short distances within are only gained by glimpses. Monkeys here and there; birds warbling; gorgeous plumaged birds on the wing, Paradise itself, the imperial realm of beauty -- nothing to wish for to make it perfect." 1866 No fishing then ... in the sixties , seventies other famous visitor has been Comandant Cousteau....Many people remember him, his Hydrofoil in San Carlos...I did hear rumors than Howard Hughes use to go fishing there... In the eighties War came in Nicaragua , Sportfishing did stop,,,Nowday Nicaragua is a quiet Country who open to tourism...Sportfishing start again in almost virgin area.. I invited all readers to have a look at my fishing report..( 16 available now ) as an example I POST the report #16 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tarpon, Gar, Rainbow bass and... Roosterfish..... Fishing report #16 Trip from the 29th of June till the 7 of July 2001 Nicaragua and Costa Rica Report From Philippe Tisseaux E mail: cecnasa@sol.racsa.co.cr Web page: http://www.nicaraguafishing Preceding fishing reports at: http://pub25.ezboard.com/btarpon Our guest in that trip as been Andy Inam from England ( IGFA Worls record owner ) . Paul our friend of Florida as also been part of the trip... We received Andy at the San Jose Airport and went to one of our Favorite hotel in the center of San Jose. Folowing day we left the city for Los chiles , via the mountains of Zarcero, Arenal Volcanos... and did enter Nicaragua aboard Julia Brava... With Andy who did bring a lot of top professional equipment, no doubt the goal was to set up a new World record , Specifically for tarpon on 12lb..( we probably lost this record a few week ago after 7 hours on line Report #15 ) .and we did fail...We had tarpon but no big one in that trip,( Except an interesting 130lb on 12lb , 3 hours fight for Andy ) . We talk a lot about World record during these days and with Paul we decide than from now we will register to IGFA the one we beat, I mean for all kind of fish. Till to day I was only thinking in the tarpon ones ( this will happen ) but we also had in the past other fish than will qualified for the all tackle ones Machaca ( around 10lb ) , Tropical gar ( more than 10lb), Mojara ( a lot over 2 lb ) and ...Tilapia ( I am afraid to register this one , actual record is 6lb something we had one of 11lb!!! On Trolled Rapala??? The actual joke is to say than if I publish that fishermen will not come ( who is interested in Tilapia Fishing ) but all the tilapia farmers will set up an operation there...) In total Andy had 12 tarpon on line 5 to the boat , 3 gars between 40 and 50lb, Machacas , a Tilapia at 1/2 a pound from world record ( No coments ) , Two big rainbow bass, a lot of Mojara and wapote on light casting and also on fly... Not to bad but still not as good as usual..not what I was expecting... .On my favorite ground near San Carlos we did not meet the usual conditions... We where around the full moon and definitely I become more and more suspectfull concerning this moment of the months for tarpon fishing . When we have Full moon and Clear sky at night ( it is usually never the case at this time of the year / Rainy season / but unfortunately have been this time ) , tarpon do not feed during the day... they may take a lure but only as an agressive attitude not because they are hungry...We could not locate the usual large feeding schools. Tarpon where around... but not active, and very hard to have them take a lure...in my opinion with the exception of one specific Rapalla...Unfortunately we only had two of these and did lost them on Tarpon on day 2 of fishing.... So we had to use our usual stuff and it did not give the expected results..???. We had Some tarpon yes, some Gar ( Several Gars in the 50lb range ) but not this big tarpon we where after with the exeption of one witch was really big I figure 200lb+ ( a train or a bus as we now call these...) who escape after a midle body shake out of the water...Big tarpon in the 200lb range do not jump but only shake the head outside of the water, half body out..... In this trip we also did went down on the Rio San Juan to El castillo , ( Exactly the same trip than made Mark Twain 140 years ago ) we stayed at very nice hotel "el albergue" and have very good food in a close restaurant...River Scrimps, Fresh snook...Was so good than I told the owner she should start a cooking school for the other restaurant in the area ... Hotel is nice there the fortress up the hill in very good shape... The rapids are bigs..very scenics... a nice place to stay and rest , no car... We also went to Solentiname Island and stayed at the beutiful Mancaron hotel..the place is lay back , no car in all the archipelago, , a lot of very beautiful handcraft here done by the local people , Carved and paint wood , birds , Fish , Mobile..we bought a lot of them as very well done and original, Diferent from usual tourist stuff...I did order several carved tarpon...than I will receive in my next trip there ...We also went to one of the painter house.( A lot of painters do live in the archipelago ) .and bought very nice piece....two of them will be soon on the wall of Andy’s house in Birmingham... ) Early morning on the 7th of June we left nicaragua to go back to Costa Rica Playas del cocos FOR A FEW offshore FISHING...This is not my speciality but I sugest Andy we do that ..he had two more day ..better to be there than in an Hotel in San Jose... We really did enjoy the place , Playa del Coco remain the same place I visit since 15 years, a bit of change but nothing major , still a Local/Family place , nothing common with the Fishing resort style... a lot of small restaurants, Small hotels , reasonable prices etc etc.. Fishing as been so/so Andy did raised a Sailfish who took the bait, we saw someothers ... Had several unknown hits..3 good size Jacks, a nice Yellow fin tuna and Andy did break his personnal record for Rooster fish with a 55lb pounder... We will soon be back in Playa del COCO as we found a very nice captain/guide... no doubt a very competent person with two good boats and a charming bed and breakfast , also there are some rumors around of 60/80lb Pacific snook in very specific spots... with Paul we want to go for them.. I am starting to take reservations for the coming months , I already did sign some trips...I have more and more contact from my web site ..... What to expect about fishing? I will say the usual tarpon , no problems they are here all year round, also Rainbow bass and Gar...In September as an aditional will also start the big Snook fishing SEASON witch will be good till JANUARY FEBRUARY... Very Important The fishing in Rio Frio and Cano Negro is opening again on the first of August..it’s also going to be hot there... ( My operation is located on the border town of Los Chiles Costa Rica and San Carlos Nicaragua so I move my boats according to fishing condition ). Fish 7 hours on line Leader at tip of the rods several time. ( We had big fish in other trip but never on 12lb as we usually use 20/30lb ) Fish as not been weighted but we had it to the boat many time and we had so many tarpon than when we see them we can estimate the weight ... Experience show than we may be wrong from only 10lb + or - Doug our guest hit the fish at 12 pm Casting for “small Tarpon “ in Medio Quesso As usual In the morning we had a lot of fun with small ones under 100lb some hits at 3 yards from the boat...The tackle we were using were perfect but we decide in order to make it more fun to use our Bass rods....we had several small fish with them then came the major surprise..on a long cast almost imediately after the lure did hit the water...( Rapalla ) Fish took the lure did jump one or two time and then did start a “ Botom fight ...7 hours some jumps and almost 20 miles down river.. Fish did play a lot of tricks, going to shore, under flaoting island , we avoid logs...A lot of tension on line but also for everybody in the boat... Doug Hearn a very very experience and strong fishermen from Atlanta did alone stand all of that...With the boat we try all possible technics in order to have the fish going up river no way...Several time we had it to the boat , ( First time after 3 hours ) leader touching the tip of the rod but impossible to use our short Gaff...or we would have badly damaged the fish ....Impossible also to Grab the leader., too short as in Casting we use a very short 100lb leader , 50 cm long . With a 10 feet leader we would have had the fish in...for Photo/ Release.. The end of the story? Well night came , we where under full moon fish seem to got tired so may be it was the good time to Pressure him more...so did Doug and twisted and tired line after 7 hours did breack .... We could have wait more and stay all night with this fish we would have had it but unfortunately we were close from the Dangerous “rapids” of Saballo..so we had to take this decision... The last hour of fight has been in front of the Park rangers from Marena than we meet on the river... I have a question for readers of this report : can anybody give me informations on tarpon record , specifically the one on 2lb test 106lb , 4lb test 128lb , 6lb test 139lb , ... I really would like to know how these anglers did make that??? really I wonder.. In this 5 days trip we had a lot of small tarpon under 100 lb (Sorry I did not count howmany ) also two 150lb+ , the 7 hours one mentioned before and an even bigger one ( 200+ ) caught on trolling by Gail , one hour on line and gone... ( We still wonder why as sudently fish has been off lure , Hook not open ... ) .also several gars two nice one around 40lb and the usual Machacas, also one nice snook on line PRECEDING Fishing trip 22 till 27 th of May Cano Negro is closed till the end of July so with Paul who is one of my regular guest. we had to fish in Nicaragua. Large schools of tarpon are back in the San Juan River size from 30lb till 200lb+ ...Really the river is full especialy close to Medio Quesso and Saballo... It is a bit dificult to have these fish take a lure or a bait....We did try a lot of diferent technics , Casting with Mirrow lures, small rapalla ALSO A LOT OF OTHER TACKLE..INCLUDING SOME I USUALLY USE FOR ROOSTER FISH IN THE SURF!! ( I had tarpon with them ) etc.. etc.. trolling rapalla and also live and dead bait ( Sardinas, Mojarra...) on buoy or free in the curent...Of course we did had many fish and all these technic have been efficient at certain moment of the day but still feel a bit frustraded as we think we should have get much more...and back to San Jose in my car with Paul we where talking of what we can do better ??? We did not use fly... Paul do prefer bait casting or Spinning but light tackle...In this trip he had several tarpon on 10lb lines... So Fun but ... I mean you are in the boat in San Juan River in some of our spots.., you stop and watch... Tarpon there on the right , 2 second tarpon there on the left , sometimes 3 , 10 at the same time around the boat ...10 , 20 meters , you cast nothing ..then again again again...10 times nothing and then bingo.... I think these tarpon are not feeding, not hungry as they would imidiately take the lure..they take it only because thes “bait” lures do make them nervous.....I would say than in the area of Medio Queso there where around 1000 tarpon on 300 meters of river..and all day long it was the same ..Yes we had many ...But still it was very funny/frustrating at the time imagine that, you anchor , no noise..and put a nice Live sardine in the middle of the school and nothing happen , the tail of the fish touching the buoy.... well we also had some this way but we thought that hit would have been imediate....no..sometime one hour wait... We also went two days to Solentiname where the fishing has been as usual for Bass and Rainbow bass... a lot almost one on each cast for Paul size from 1lb to 7lb... Philippe Tisseaux cecnasa@racsa.co.cr May 17, 2001 Tarpon Snook Rainbow bass fishing Expedition Fishing Report #14 We recently did organised two fishing expedition to Nicaragua always in The Uper Rio San Juan area At 8pm on the 22 of April I had the pleasure to receive at San Jose airport Joyce and Terry coming from Mineapolis imidiately we left for the mountain of Sarcero, We did spend the night at charming bed and Breakfast Don Beto...Folowing day we left early had our local Gallo Pinto and our Iguana Show on the road and did arive in Los Chiles around 9am...Augusto was waiting for us , Boat and equipment ready, we imidiately left for Nicaragua via the Jungle of Rio Frio aboard Julia Brava...Ariving in San Carlos fishing did start around 11am after the Imigration paper work... In the afternoon after several hits Joyce had her Tarpon to the boat, 1 hour 30mn fight , fish was big 170/180lb on 30lb line... Joyce have now the Women all tackle record aboard Julia Brava. We had a very nice and Fun dinner In Kaoma , Mariachi etc Also a delicious meal with the river shrimps we bought earlier on the River banks, and also some catch of the day... Folowing day Several Tarpon hit and Terry had a big tarpon on line lost after 10 minutes, Joyce had a very big TILAPIA??? around 6 lb ( The world record is 6lb 5 oz in Lake Arenal ), On this day we also went in wild Medio Quesso but where the condition was bad .. Really much to hot .Dinner Exellent as usual at El Mirador in San Carlos , Night at Hoytel Leyko.. On Day 3 in the Morning Terry had his tarpon to the boat 180/190lb , several other on line...Fishing did stop around 1 pm, We went back to Costa Rica then to Sarcero for another night in Don Beto. On day 4 we had a typical local breakfast, and as departure Fly was at 1 pm we did spend some hours in the Artisanal center of Sarchi where Terry and Joyce did bought some? ...Furniture !! Than I had send to USA a few days later... Fishing has been ok, but it is still a bit dificult as the level of the river is still low...So there are not so many tarpon for example we did not see the large usual scholl, Pity because we would also have catch some tarpon on fly....It’s a mater of week we are waiting for the rain when it start the first week are going to be crasy.... Last week we also made another expedition ... I could not go Augusto did handle the situation , and went down with Guest to El Castillo ...a lot of tarpon there but basically the same conditions Low river , very hot water so lasy tarpon...Result some Tarpon , but also in front of San Carlos ( on my favourite ground ) a Tilapia again but this time around 12 lb !!!! so no doubt an all tackle word record... We are not after Tilapia !!! Why do they take our Rapalla ?Anyway THIS catch IS ONE MORE TIME A PROOF THAN ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN OUR VIRGIN jUNGLE.!!! A 300lb tarpon? A 60lb snook this is possible. I had myself tarpon on line whitch where real monsters...even on 40lb I could do...NOTHING..only let the line go putting more and more pressure in order to try to stop the fish and have it jump ..but no way hook open one time tarpon did me the favor to stop but then half the body out of the water a shake and By.... I forgot during this last trip guest also went to Solentiname where they had a lot of Wapote and Rainbow bass ( 6 to 8 lb ) a top fighter and also a delicious fish. Guests Mario, from the board of Club Amateur de pesca of Costa Rica ( An institution here Club has been created in 1946 IGFA since 1947 ) , Vincent Vice President of Club National de Pesca ( Also organisator of the Snook Master Tournament of Costa Rica ) , and Adolpho member of Club National , as usual we had many hits but unfortunately only two big tarpon to the boat and no snook .. With these very experienced anglers we did learn and exchange a lot, try new techniques. etc .. For example we did quit all the triple hook on our floating Rapalla and use one single Circle hook mounted around 2 cm in front of the Rapalla .. ( Catalina ) as do now most of the guide fishing for big tarpon in Africa.....This setting has not been very successful , Honestly the mounting we made was not perfect and we will have to try again... What I consider more and more important is the weight of the lure...the lighter the better ( No resistance no weight... so difficult for the tarpon to through it out this is probably why the Balsa Rapala works...) I am thinking to built some special lures soon...( Why not in Polystyrene ??? Did any reader experience that? I know it will only be a one strike lure but? all those who have been fishing with us do know how look a so expensive brand new Rapala after a fight with a 150lb tarpon.. ) During this trip we also have been fishing almost two days for Wapote/Lagunero/Rainbow bass in Solentiname Archipelago ( No big Rainbow bass that time the biggest around 6/7 lb usual size is 8 to 12 lb ) ) we had a lot of them on light tackle , casting usually very very close to shore... For this really fun fishing definitely Solentiname island is a very good place ...Our expert fishing guests did agree . We where using Spinning but it is also great on fly as we did in another trip with our friend Peter Gorinsky . In this time of the year the Nicaragua lake may become ruff , this is definitely no problem when we are fishing in the Archipelago even with very heavy winds but for example this time it would have been risky to go back to San Carlos in the evening ( 12 miles of open lake ) so we had to spend the night on one of the island ...A very nice fun and cool experience, The Solentiname islands remain a very special and Unique place, so beautiful, absolutely no Mosquitoes no bugs.. ... We had Grilled fish, Excellent Gallo Pinto, Tortillas....we did sleep in Hammock in a rancho close to the unique house on the small island (10 Acres ) . An entire very simpatico Fishermen family live there, they own the Island and have a very special style of living far from any kind of pollution so close from real Ecology...Very friendly they gave us Hospitality and also I did learn a lot from them not only from the fishing point of view... . This kind of improvisation is also part of my fishing expedition.... Note Fishing there has been better during the day than early Morning or late evening???? In the future I plan to have at least one day of such fishing for all my guest coming for a week with us...and why not a night?...I am planning to set up with this family a kind of small guest house there. In the coming weeks the rainy season will start , level of San Juan will grow and more tarpon will be in front of San Carlos...No need to go far it will be like that till the end of March next year, and every day Full moon or not no difference... ( Concerning the rainy season , there is no reason to worry about the weather, Ok it is raining but then sunny then rain then sun...most of the time cloudy but rain only at night... Really nothing major , and the fishing condition are more than excellent... ) We have some guests coming from USA and France in the coming weeks , I will receive them this time at San Jose Airport in Costa Rica also some did decide to enter via Managua Nicaragua. Following day they took a fly from La costena to San Carlos where we where waiting for them with Augusto at the ( Rustic ) airport… Problem is that La costena seems to not respect the schedule !!! so they did land at 2pm , not at 12.30 witch was suppose to be the time…Ok we did loose 1h and a half of fishing , after a traditional Bao lunch fishing did start at 3 pm and we did start to have tarpon hits… Globally during this trip we have been fishing two days and a half, we had around 50 tarpons hits , around 15 seriously on lines but only 3 to the boat..!!!! .really a few as my average till this trip was three hit/one tarpon release... ( more or less 4 to 5 released tarpon per day ). Difficult to explain except than we notice than tarpon are bigger since a week ??? really we had a lot of problems.. So many strike so few tarpon , we have to improve something. .and wonder what? If someone has suggestion they are more than welcome… We fish on 20lb/30lb / 40ln we generally use Rapalla , Leader 80lb…..we were all kidding saying that these tarpon had some Vitamins... all year long the tarpon we catch here are much heavier to the one caught on the Caribean sea ( same length ) all my guest can confirm that …but now it start to be a serious question. .Augusto, Me and Alan all had our finger burned...The .tarpon we did catch where around 150lb. One bigger ..also I am certain that we had much bigger on line...200lb+ easy…I had two like that myself ( Normally I do not touch the rod but this was a special case…) as I wanted to set the hock correctly but could not…Alan, Jeff and Dave are very experience fishermen…we try and try different techniques So??? Guest did stay at Hotel Cabina Leykos ( correct for fishermen ) We had our lunch aboard dinners at fun and good restaurant Kaoma.. Wapote ( big bass but very good here , nothing compare with the sad Florida Large mouth as said our guests ),..big River scrimp ( I lb each almost a lobster ) well I had no complain …just the contrary and other local specialties…… Even if I had a very “ international life “ ( I have been living in several countries including some years in Florida ) I do not forget than I am born in France , Frenchmen as a lot of strange behavior… but no doubts put particular attention on meals aboard or at restaurants… Also in the coming week I am going to have a rancho with hammock built on the river banks for lunch time and relax a bit at midday I have found a really top place for Tarpon, Snook, Rainbow bass , I have no doubts about that…I am lucky in off not to have to worry about fishing, now I am working on the details in order to make my trip as nice as possible for my guest.. for example in that trip I found another new hotel to stay in San Carlos, still it’s far from being the Ritz but better than Leykos ..for the future I already did found the land where I wish to built our lodge… I cannot start to built right now but will do all my best to start this year…a kind of fishing lodge Club house for my guests/friends all the one who came knows what I mean…. Only serious inconvenient in that trip has been a problem with Costena Airlines , in the fly back San Carlos/Granada , as the fly took off 4 hours late ( Local explanation is that the Queen of Spain was arriving in Managua so they change all the schedule???? ) Anyway a big problem for my guests who arrived to late in Managua to connect with their return fly to Florida.. with American Airlines….I will talk to them to day in order to know if they could take same day a later fly... ( Last minute Yes they made it the same day via San Jose ) Anyway in the future this is to take in consideration...Have many hours between connection , other option is that Costena do offer me special charter fly for my guests ( with absolute respect of schedule ) but this make the cost higher.. Finally may be it is easier to come via Costa Rica , then my car...I never have problem such way.. and this is fun as we cross the border aboard my boat… I do not want to be boring, or abuse of this space and repeat my general comments on my fishing and trip and accommodation in this report so I invite all interested readers to have a look at my Fishing report http://pub25.ezboard.com/btarpon At my Photos and presentation text at http://communities.msn.com/tarponfishing/homepage Any comments? please e mail me at cecnasa@sol.racsa.co.cr Philippe Tisseaux Web page : http://www.marine-electronics.net/tropicalfishing Email ; cecnasa@sol.racsa.co.cr Phone ( 506 ) 239 40 37 or ( 506 ) 293 04 96 in Costa Rica nathan nathani@trailfinders.com February 24, 2001 i have a few days in auckland towards the end of march, and will be bringing a freshwater trout outfit . could anyone help in suggesting a book or mag or site that lists some freshwater fishing spots around town. family commitments lessen my ability to go to far afield however transport will not be a problem . many thanks in advance Ian Murray murray@wn.planet.gen.nz February 23, 2001 I am going up to Rarotonga on business in may. Philippe Tisseaux cecnasa@sol.racsa.co.cr February 12, 2001 TARPON FISHING EXPEDITION COSTA RICA NICARAGUA San Carlos sportfishing Fishing Fishing reports: #7 21th till 24th of January 2001 #8 29th of January till the 5th of February Philippe Tisseaux E mail ; cecnasa@sol.racsa.co.cr Apologies to readers for my terrible English…. Fishing Report #7 A two country trip this time ( Costa Rica and Nicaragua ) and with four guests so we had to use two boats….A little more difficult to organize .. I want to be attentive to guests need…so I had to go from one boat to the other… but with Augusto as a chief guide , Juan, Chepe, Abraham and Walter to help No problem. A lot of people but this is necessary in our expeditions…, 2 eventually 3 anglers per boat “who know well each other before the trip”, then 2 persons to: handle the fishing, drive the boat, release the fish…., In most of my trips we all join for dinner and sometime we go to sleep very late…a rule is than the boat has to be perfectly ready and clean at 6 am, so Augusto had to get up at 4 am and fish till 6pm and then late diner again…really to much, Even if he never complain I now have someone to help him…. Aboard in this trip David and Sam from California, Jay from Florida, and Jeff Klassen from Washington. ( Jeff own several IGFA world record his professional opinion on our fishing and spots was very important for us ) I guess I did not disappointed him…Would be obnoxious to make more comments but wish all readers interested to ask him directly jeff@jeffklassenfishing.com Jeff is well known in our “fishing world…” he has very interesting Internet pages located at: http://www.jeffklassenfishing.com/ First day we have been fishing in COSTA RICA , in Rio Frio and Cano Negro…We had several tarpon hits on casting but none hook correctly… . On this day I wanted to show Jeff the beauty of our Jungle rivers and we where also after Gar…omnipresent every where but not to the boat we were casting my traditional Rattle trap usually very efficient but No way? We even did try some strange special lures… No doubt would have been much better to use bait on the bottom ( Small sardines, or part of dead fish , Gars are not difficult..) ) as local people do very successfully; Anyway we had some small Wapote , and a nice snook 22 lb . After a big dinner with: “the snook” and river scrimps…at Restaurant El Parque of our friend Don Esteban. Night has been at Ecodirecta Second day we did enter Nicaragua aboard Julia Brava, Luggage and fishing equipment ( a lot ) in my other small boat. In San Carlos our second ‘’ Fishing boat “ was waiting and ready for us….( We had to hire it there…) very “rustic boat” Far from being so nice than Julia Brava but it did make the job… I will have a second sportfishing boat in service in San Carlos in the months coming and it will be a 28 feet ,( in order to be able to fish our usual grounds but also to go for the Rainbow bass of Solentiname and the San Miguelito area for Tarpon Snook…whatever the waves of the Lake…). As usual we had several tarpon on this day, I did explain to Jay my “Personal technique” on a tarpon hit on trolling…(I do the same on casting when fish run ) I set the drag very light , the fish take and go ( anyway how could it be stopped!! ) then I take the rods and while fish is still running and feeling it I put progressively more and more pressure with the drag or better in my point of view with the thumb because I feel it better and to much pressure will eventually make it jump and I do not want that on this moment… ( sorry sorry Jay…). If fish is running with the lure it means than it is already partially hooked Putting more pressure you set up the hook more and when first jump come fish is already well hooked…NO NEED FOR A BIG STRIKE….This work perfectly in my opinion ( Again sorry for your thumb Jay ..) At night we had again a River Scrimps dinner at Kaoma. Day 3 Fishing did start early , We had tarpon early morning and then nothing for many hours , I figure than the reason has been than the weather did get cooler? Well we tried and tried and no hits… I did feel than Guests where starting to wonder and was a little bit uncomfortable..( Even if I knew than this was momentary…This did happen in the past .. but we never know…) Then weather/Water did change ( a very very little difference…) and again we started to have many tarpons…size 90lb to 180lb no very big one that time…Also some gar ., Machaca , and a very nice snook 30lb + Dinner has been to MIRADOR. Day4 We only did fish in the morning and had Tarpon again…At 10am we did enter back Costa Rica , Guest did live Los Chiles at 11am in a van in direction of Samara /Nosara Unfortunately in reason of bad roads, Destroy bridge etc they had a very long ride to reach Guanacaste where they had several days of successful Fishing ( Rooster fish, jacks..) with Jeff … Again we released many tarpons in this trip, everybody had tarpon to the boat… Also two good size snook 22 and 30lb , Gars and Machaca… We are now in the dry season so the level of the river is much lower and we have to use our “ summer lures “ …Color remains the same but no more Down deep runner …In reality this do not affect the efficiency of our fishing…we catch the same ….It will be like this for 3 to 4 months more… Next week we will receive three guests coming from Florida, We will fish the same area in Nicaragua, These person will come Via Managua , a night in Granada at Hotel Colonial then a 40mn fly to San Carlos where fishing will start… In a trip already booked for the 7th to the 14th of March with “Tarpon aficionados“ coming from Europe we will fish our usual grounds but will also try to fish Medio Quesso river than I mentioned in one of my preceding report…may be also San Miguelito. Fishing Report#8 This trip have been organize from the 29th of January till the 5th of February This report is based on info given to me by Augusto and Peter, I was not aboard… Peter Gorinsky ( El maestro es-fly ) in Costa Rica did hired my Boat with Augusto for almost 8 days in order to fish Nicaragua with two guests. Obvious with Peter aboard the trip was 100% fly On the 29th they did enter Nicaragua aboard Julia Brava via Rio Frio, San Carlos and then direct to Solentiname archipelago. Fishing has been very good for Rainbow bass on fly …Also for the tourism part , Solentiname more than a hundred islands is a very beautiful area with a lot of Handcraft, Painting etc…Everybody did stay in nice hotel Solentiname.. A Fun birthday party, 3 days there and then down on Rio San Juan to El Castillo….The reservation where made at Hotel Albergue El Castillo …but the President of Nicaragua was also coming that day so at last moment we had to move at Hospedage Richardson.. Nice place , Good food…History , Scenery …What has been very strange in this part of the trip has been the fishing…All the area was full of tarpon , Augusto and Peter told me: ‘’ really a lot of tarpon everywhere “ but NO WAY to have them take a fly… ( a bit cold? Bad moment in the day? ) Augusto as I know him was probably a bit nervous and would have love to try trolling or spinning with one of our favorite lures , I can ear him ” Only one in order you see one jumping…” …but No way Augusto: remember fly fishing is much more than catch a fish on a tinny rod…You did well your guide job by bringing the guests where tarpon were…If Peter did not have one that day, trust me there is only a very few probability than somebody could have done it on Fly… Peter called me after and told me trip has been great, every body has been very happy from fishing and fun…Peter did ad Augusto is a great guide, he is so attention , he work so much. really a very special person .. Peter E mail is ffcr@flyfishcostarica.com What can I say is than anyway I regret than they did not have a Tarpon even if for real fly persons etc etc …especially as they were as usual a lot of tarpon……Anyway Peter did reserve my boat for another week in May knowing his integrity this means a lot to me. Aboard Niko From Holland , Claude from Paris , and Etienne owner of Hotel Colonial in Granada Nicaragua / hotel Jardin of eden in Costa Rica . We really only did fish 8/10 hours in total , as on the request of guests we had to spend many many hours at restaurants enjoying specifically the local river schrimps (1 lb each!! a lobster ).., This party was also very interested in ecology .. Anyway , I report 15 tarpon hits , 10 hook up with several jumps.., 3 tarpons released to the boat, it should have been 6 or 7 …( Do you agree Etienne ? ) .Size of fish 80lb to 150lb +... Claude ( from Normandy in France ) on his 60 birthday on Saturday had his first tarpon..110 lb 1 hour fight .”Feliz Cumpleano Claude “…., Niko had his first two tarpons 100lb and 150lb. ( 1 hour 20mn ) . We had a lot of fun with Niko, Claude, Etienne after a while they even did ask me for smaller fish...??? I said but I thought you were here for big tarpons..? Yes Philippe but you know ….Ok I will try smaller fish and then… another tarpon...Who takes the rod? .No one get up? .. etc..etc... This trip has been different as the guest did come directly from Granada ( Hotel Colonial ) . They did reach San Carlos on Saturday mid day after a quick fly with Costena ( 45 minutes over the Nicaragua Lake, islands/volcano of Omotepe and Solentiname…) This is a fast way to reach our fishing spots…much faster than the Usual trip by road from San Jose Costa Rica. I sugest this other option to my guest coming from USA , or Europe: fly in via Managua, The guide and Bus from Hotel Colonial will be waiting for guests at Managua international airport… then Spend the night in so beautiful Granada, I do recomand to stay at very very nice Hotel COLONIAL… then following morning fly to San Carlos with Costena…to start fishing around 10 am… Trip would be 7 day trip , 6 hotel nights ( 2 nights at Hotel Colonial and 3 nights at leykos ) , 4 days Tarpon / Snook professional fishing …the total cost is $ 1450 per person based on two persons ( All include, Fishing, guide, Fishing permit , Tackle, all transferts.. meals , Accomodation.. etc etc.. ) Philippe Tisseaux Web page : http://www.marine-electronics.net/tropicalfishing Preceding fishing reports at: http://pub25.ezboard.com/btarpon Email ; cecnasa@sol.racsa.co.cr Phone ( 506 ) 239 40 37 or ( 506 ) 293 04 96 in Costa Rica nik nikofnz@hotmail.com January 31, 2001 22ppc & 22-250 brass wanted. ( The week before we had several big snook but in Costa Rica precisely in Rio Frio, our record still remain a 40 lb caught by Augusto ). Paul our friend from Florida was again with us and again had a lot of tarpon , I guess the most memorable one is the one we did catch at 5.30 pm and that he had to fish at night , problem has been that this fish was very very strong.. in the first 2 minutes fish did took him 300 meter of lines, 25lb anyway he did handle so well the situation with Augusto driving the Julia Brava than he had the fish to the boat , did touch the leader and…a major jump and . fish gone but we did keep our Rapala.. so It takes now between 15 to 30 minutes to Paul to bring the fish to the boat he will be back in April and with him we want to try to fish on 12lb may be on 8lb …( We usually fish on 20lb or 30lb ) I showed Augusto the world record listing of IGFA he cannot believe some people did catch tarpon of more than a 100lb on 4lb lines.. Yes probably at sea I guess in very special conditions probably with a long long fight but yes they made it… Also aboard in this trip a french photographer Yves Van verbecke who did shot more than 400 photos…jumps, action, release. Scenery etc this morning I had a glanse to the pictures , he really did made a very good job I guess some of these pictures will be published in magazine.. , Also even if he is really a very novice fisherman ( He admit than before he only had small bass 1lb ( perche ) when he was much much younger in France…) he did have his tarpon to the boat so we had the pleasure to cut his T shirt , ( a big hole in the back ) and we all did sign it as it is the tradition for everybody for the first tarpon caught aboard Julia Brava…This rule is for everybody whatever the numbers of tarpons people had before in their life… Concerning the photos I wonder what I will do , I cannot add 200 photos on my internet page in my fishing album…. it would take half an hour to open….I guess I am going to change all the one I had witch are bad/flat for the new ones witch are really much better…but this will not be done before a month as I am really bad with all the internet stuff… Important During this trip we also did discover a much better hotel to stay in Nicaragua . I remind all of you than you are welcome to fish with us, (Augusto and I will be happy to make a big hole in your T shirt…) I do charge but very reasonable rates, I receive my guest at international airport In San Jose Costa Rica , from there we go with my car to Los Chiles and enter Nicaragua by the Rio Frio River aboard my boat… Trip is safe , accommodation and food are ok no much more to say about fishing except than it is like that all year round, and that I have to find a deal with Rapala , their lures are the best but very very fragile for tarpon… Happy new year Philippe Tisseaux Web page : http://www.marine-electronics.net/tropicalfishing Preceding fishing reports at: http://pub25.ezboard.com/btarpon Email ; cecnasa@sol.racsa.co.cr Phone ( 506 ) 239 40 37 or ( 506 ) 293 04 96 in Costa Rica Daniel billj@xtra.co.nz December 27, 2000 Looking for a gearbox for Mercury 50hp 1993. Deer have been taken out of a 800acre area of private land near dannevike and also out of the helichopter free diggers valley /oroua river valley/and pourangaki areas. there are two ways of stopping this 1/ get photographs of these helichopters loaded as on the final trip home they tend to put a bit much on the chain . get these pics to their insurance companies 2/ find out the end user of the animals and send emails ,pointing out what poisons/diseases the meat will contain as now days overseas persons tend to be very sensitive in this respect. good, dumb ideas. some feedback please. if these helichopters spoil our hunting, I don't see why we shouldn't spoil their ability to sell the poached animals, and or their ability to operate economically. Maurice Auxier Mcakma@aol.com August 04, 2000 Last year I bought two new 150 HP Johnson outboards. I am not sure what year they were built, probably 97 or 98. I am away from were my boat is stored, so I can,t give you the year for certain. The problem is every so often one of the engines will not start. It sounds like the starter is not engauged. Let is set for a few minutes and it will start right up. A friend of mind bought two engines at the same time that I bought mine, and he is having the same problem. The problem never will not show up, when you want it to. It always happens somewhere out in the water. The engines probably only have about ten hours on them. Your thoughts would be welcome. I wonder is this was a common problem, since my friend and I are having the same problem. charlie mills wxcmills@wxc.co.nz August 02, 2000 can any one tell me the start of the whitebait season in the NI. The next was for a faulty float valve. This was obviously a monday morning motor or a friday afternoon job, or is it because OMC were too busy fixing the heads of the ficht engines and didn't worry too much about the carby models?.I'm interested to hear from anyone thats had similar problems. They owe me an explanation but its a waste of time talking to a salesperson as they are just talk, talk people who know little and care less about the products they sell.It would be good to hear from people who have problems with gear here, if you read the magazines its all goodness and light because if the journo's criticised anything too severely the free rides would stop.Next time buy a Jap!!!! kristene kristene@zfree.co.nz June 06, 2000 hi i was wondering if there was anyone out there that wants to be my e-mail pal. if so my e-mail address is kristene@zfree.co.nz.thanks see ya! ricky morris gracemax1@hotmail.com May 31, 2000 Hi i am looking to bye a couple of pig dogs .I would like a good finder and a holder or bailers are fine take what i could get aseem aseem_narula@yahoo.com May 29, 2000 hi! every body is there some body good at Java??reply at my email.. That bag of billed beauties may be worth a bag of $100.00 bills.Seniors and Decoy TreasureMany seniors going through the burden of sorting out their old "stuff" finddecoys and have no idea what to do with them. Usually the first person onthe scene gets the bag full. Be careful! We all know what looks like amountain of guys junk could have sentimental value but what a bought themonetary value? We have helped many seniors identify their decoys and inform them of themonetary value. Many of us don't care of the monetary value when you want togive Granddad's old ducks to the Grand kids please remember that giving thema decoy is great but giving it to them with a documented history is worthmany times more! The Decoy Information Center.Once hunting North America for the allusive old wooden bird and waterfowl decoys. Now we burn energy at the computer helping people ID decoys found in their homes, cottages, barns and garages. Their efforts have been recognized byinternational television, newspapers, magazines, and museums. At a bucks or two here and there in donations per decoy, they sure don't do it for the money. Their service can provide, phone calls appraisals, letters with completedescription and history, insurance appraisals, and evaluations with a pricehistory & forecast. Most people include in their letters to NDIC a photo ofall their decoys..You don't have to be a photographer. We can ID about 80% of valuable decoys fromacross a room or from a fuzzy picture.. (A small room).Combined they have viewed thousand of water fowling decoys, most ofwhich started out as hunting bait used to attract migrating waterfowl inrang waiting hunters. These are not the machine-smooth, colorful imitationsthat grace department store shelves, but instead are sometimes drab and wellsome say, ugly. Decoys were first used in North America over 2,000 years ago.To a seasoned researcher there is a lot of beauty in these hand carvedwooden birds. Each decoy is a piece of art and a true example of a dyingcraft. Members of NDIC who have been referred to as a walkingencyclopedias on duck decoys, they have a captivating story to tell with every decoy they view. Emailing or writing is recommended, because if youget a one of the researchers on the phone they can talk for ever on their love of decoys.Old decoys are hunted year by dealers and collectorsCollecting decoys has been a pursuit in the United States for over 50 years. The few prime decoys that are left can fetch hundreds up to thousands each. Most Antique Dealers admit, to make a living in that business itsrecommended too generalize not specialize completely. Because of theextreme lack of information on decoys they have been "sweet dreams andnightmares" from generalized dealers. The one common problem gettingestimates on decoys is not exclusive to Antique Dealer. With out vastknowledge, offering a fair price with is near impossible. How do you know if you have a prime collectable, investment decoy or just aold $25.00 duck? This the #1 question but certainly not the only one.The main criteria for evaluating any bird decoy is.1 Identify the artist or carver and area of origin. Most valuable decoys have been documented.Exposure increases the value to collectors.2 Original condition is important.Like old fine art and old decoys are worth more when they're in mintcondition. Appreciating the abuse most old blocks endured some of thebest finds come from in the a home rather than in a barn.3 Identify the species. In most areas of North America the Whistler & Bluebill were the most commondecoys created and were produced in larger quantities than other birds.Rare species like shorebirds, mergansers, buffleheads, geese, teal.4 Identify the age.Generally but not always the older the decoy the more it's worth. Manyprime decoys created in the 1940' and 1950's have fetched thousandseach.5 Finding the buyer for your carving. Most collectors specialize in specific decoys by area, carver, vintage orspecies. Finding the right collector for your decoys may increase theirvalue many fold.6 Extra detail increases value.Added carving on the wings, body and head or detailed painting usuallyincreases the dollar value. These and many more questions can be answered with a quick email to a short video or a few photographs of your decoys sent toNDIC.Starting out CollectingMany of you started collecting the first time you picked the old decoy outof your net or saw it on the "NET" or found it on the shore.. That was the hard part! finding the old decoys ,,,,,Now you need to find out what you have!!!!Floating gold may look like an old duck or bird."No matter what kind of decoys you have, it could come from anywhere inNorth America" advises NDIC. There is no telling where history hasdeposited these fowl treasures. In your basement, maybe at your cottage orperhaps next door!Hunters moved many times, taking their treasured decoys with them. Mostsportsmen tried different areas, many times losing one adrift and, if luckwas in their favor, they would find a block or two along the shore. Many wealthy sportsmen would travel all over the world, bringing theirdecoys with them. If the shoot went well, they may tip their guide with oneor all of their favorite lures .Recently we met with a person that had several decoys less than a mile fromour home. Two of his decoys were plover (shore bird) he picked up years agowhile in the Caribbean. One other gent near by had a number of decoys from the Detroit river are,,, We are a long way from there..Dig out those old ducks. This year when you dig out and dust off your old duck decoys, take a secondlook - they could bring you more bucks than ducks. If someone in your family, past or present, was a hunter or collector ofduck decoys, then you could be harboring a nice financial nest egg in yourattic or garage. Many people know they have an old wooden duck, goose or shorebird decoykicking around out in the barn, or up in the attic or at their old huntingcamp, but can't seem to find the time to search it out and discover whatit's really worth.Identifying treasure. If you knew that a one dollar bill with a certain serial number just becameworth thousands, would you not take the time to rifle through your things todiscover if you could possibly be holding this wind fall. For every excuseyou come up with, not to look into your decoys we can give fivestories were people should have and didn't.Often we hear from people having ducks somewhere on their property, butthey can't be that valuable anyway. " They're just brown or black uglythings" is a common description heard over and over again. What if insteadof decoys they were silver coins.Even if they were gold coins the ducks may still be worth more.Selling your ducks."What distresses me most are people selling their ducks as old wooden birdsand not for the art form of historical importance. "One widow I spoke tosold her husbands old decoys to an antique dealer for $35 each, only todiscover later they were worth $800 apiece."Fence post treasure. Many rare finds have been made by people cleaning out a house or garageafter the death of a family member who was a former hunter. Patricia alsotells about a man who found some shorebird decoys in his basement, worththousands. An other man who used similar shorebirds to spruce up his yardand mounted them on the tops of his fence post. Both men thought the birdswere interesting, but never dreamed they would actually be valuable.A decoy collector happened by the yard and couldn't believe his luck. Theserare decoys were fastened there like the proverbial sitting ducks. Adishonest collector could have made away with them for nothing, or at leasta very few dollars.Passion for decoys and the outdoors. There very well may be no people on earth with such passion for historicaldecoys, the outdoors, other people and of course family. Our love for decoys is almost contagious. Once we get going onthe subject, you are eager to hear more on this little known theme. It isamazing that most people know very little about the value of decoys andsecondly some people are not even aware that old decoys are worth anythingat all.Garage sales can be a mixed blessing . They can turn up these treasures onany given day and on the other side of the coin, these treasures can beburied when people sell these valuable decoys to people who have no ideawhat they're worth.A decoy worth thousands of dollars can be sold for just $5 - $10 and end upsitting on the fireplace mantle collecting dust. Duck decoys are certainlythe most common type of decoy seen around. The value of these birds varygreatly depending upon who made them and how close they come to theiroriginal condition.Market gunners decoys. When market hunting was legal, professional hunters decoyed the waterfowlpopulation and sold their day's shoot to stores and restaurants. They gotthree cents to five cents a bird , and easily made a living at this when themarshes were lush and green and yielded an abundance of food for theirfeathery friends. It was not unusual to see "rigs" of up to 300 decoysbouncing on the rough hard waters of the lakes and waterways. These hunters also shot other birds such as swans and plovers. They wereconsidered a delicacy so decoys were also made of these birds. During thistime, thousands of birds were being slaughtered. Conservationistscomplained and at the same time a number of insects increased dramaticallydestroying farmers crops. The government then stepped in and figured (wrongly) that there were moreinsects because there were fewer birds. Market hunting was banned andstricter , shorter seasons were put on migrating waterfowl.Confidence decoys. The hunters also used what they called "confidence decoys". These decoyswere made to represent seagulls and herons which were considered "jitterybirds". Hence if a flock of geese or ducks flew over these decoys, theyfigured it was pretty safe to land. After all if the gulls and herons werethere, it must be a secure place to feed.As a result, many of these decoys made, especially swan, shorebird, gull andheron decoy, were thrown away or burned, ultimately making these decoysextremely rare and valuable.Seeing the plight of these decoys take a nose dive into the hands of some"wary" collectors and antique dealers out to make a buck, We began afree information center to anybody interested in obtaining an evaluation ordetails on their bird decoys. There is no pressure to sell your decoys. Our ultimate dream is to set up a traveling display and apublicly owned collection to be enjoyed internationally for the art form inwhich they are.In the U.S., the world record was over $318,000.00 for "one" decoy. InCanada, $23,000.00 U.S. was paid for another. Although this is the rare endof the scale, it certainly shows how much decoys have risen to the ranks ofan elite and prestigious commodity. So perhaps if you've been planning that long-awaited vacation or if UncleJoe happens to have a few decoys kicking around - maybe you'd like to take achance on that lottery. Here is a better idea just send a couple of bucksand we'll help you with your ducks.Contact us at .Your old decoys may look like a basket of old dirty ducks or a bag of bangedup old birds but to the right collector they may be worth thousands and havevolumes of history to tell you. Give them a chance.Happy decoy hunting !!! Karen karend@ihug.co.nz March 29, 2000 Looking for people to participate in a survey. Really big tarpons and snooks are present all year round . We observed there Tarpons reaching up to 300 pounds! Thus it seems that a percentage of tarpons mature in these waters ( they don’t go back to sea... ). Especially since their back is black in color and their belly golden. To prove our suspicion, we like to introduce a tagging program, where each tarpon caught will be tagged accordingly. ( How can we do that? is there anyone that can give us informations? Help? ) River snooks of 40lb and up ,. are also found along our virgin jungle waterways Untauched virgin jungle scenery suround the shores of our spotsAt my knowledge a tarpon of more than 300lb would be a new world record, and we know it’s possible in our spots I have the boat , the guide ( 25 years of experience ), the tackles, all the infrastuctureI need partners? In fact, this love has led to unusual hobby. Where others like to collect deer trophys I like to collect deer stories. Especially stories that are ironic or humors. If anyone has experienced "something funny on the way to the woods", please share it with me at my E-mail address. I hope that one of you New Zealanders can help me answer a question that many of my friends and I have been debating, "what species of deer is the hardest to hunt". Because of the wide variety of deer in New Zealand, I hope that some of you can help me find the answer. One thing I've learned over the years, from St. Hubert to the present, we deer hunters are the greatest friends a deer can ever have. I hope to make some of you my friends as well.Sleep light, and keep your powder dry,Kim Solem Scottmilligan scottmilligan76@hotmail.com October 12, 1999 I have family that wish to come to n.zfrom sweden to hunt, they arrive in march. Is this a alright time of the year to hunt? Annie butterflies31@hotmail.com May 29, 1999 JOHN MOSS your recipe request...here's a few tips hope they are of some use..... Firstly do not over cook it :-) .If your fish is frozen (generally a good idea to use within a month to avoid disappointment), thaw out completely the night before, then wipe with paper towel.. Kingfish grills well, first suggestion ,coat with oil ,squeeze of lemon or lime juice, freshly ground pepper,or , perhaps open a lovely bottle of wine (good enough reason too !) and marinate it .good idea to baste it while grilling so it doen't dry out.,and dot with butter and freshly picked herbs,The grill time depends on the thickness of the steak,. Stewing Kingfish can take on another fine taste , try this by frying a couple of medium sized onions and three small cloves of crushed garlic in butter until golden, ADD: salt & pepper, 4 to 5 quartered potatoes and 2 medim thickly sliced carrots cover with water , simmer until vegetables are 'nearly' tender, now add 4 or so quartered tomatoes , about 1 kg of your Kingfish cut into chunks, a good dash of white wine or left over dry sherry from Christmas will come in handy, chppped parsley cook for a further 15 -20 mins serve up with a crisp salad . John Moss manager@tclsafety.co.nz May 29, 1999 Does anyone have any special recipes or ideas about cooking King Fish steaks? Thanks in anticipation.
