Anyone here shoot one?
Need both brass and projectiles but no idea who might have them, and it would appear its difficult to now import brass.

Thanks,
WK

Is the Wanganui Black Powder Club still going ? They would point you in the right direction

Yeah, you've picked a bad time to source bits. Gunworks used to have a sub gauge brass shotgun hull suitable for the Snider.
I used to use a Lee minie even though I also had the proper Lyman mould. Lee mould are probably also a rarity right now.

Wanganui BP Club, probably extinct now but it would be worth visiting the range on the Airport Road on a Saturday or Sunday and asking around. I have long ago lost touch with the membership and a lot of the ones I knew are now dead.

Try the Upper Hutt gunshop. Not sure what they call themselves now.

I used brass made by a company called SPANZ. Also long extinct.

Poxy system, won't let me back in to edit my previous post.

This guy might be able to help with brass. He's in the SI.

IIRC 24g Brass hulls or 24g plastic hulls can be adapted.

I got Bertram brass off the Upper Hutt guy at $7.50 each. Those cases have been reloaded 30 times now and still good.
Haven't seen him advertise any for ages.

Ocassionally cases will pop up on Trademe - just got to keep your eye open.

I shoot the Lee .600" round ball out of mine because that's what gives me the best accuracy. I'm shooting that over 85gr 1F homemade powder I compress and granulate and that ball will whistle through two 20 litre plastic oil drums full of water and bury into the dirt backstop.
Recoil and accuracy is okay in a 6 1/4 lb gun out to 100 yards - the ball weighs 326gr.

It does start to get a bit bullying with a 500 or 600gr bullet and I pulled some 811gr bullets I loaded after shooting just the one ........ or maybe two.

I make, or open my moulds to .590/.600" and haven't really found a repeatedly accurate long bullet combination - though I haven't really played around since I backbored my barrel back to decent rifling.
I got a 1:48" twist and really should be able to shoot something in the 500gr + category.

Other cases are 24 gauge Magtech shotgun brass or plastic hulls - but I haven't used those.

Thanks all.
The Wanganui black powder club has been defunct for over a decade now. However the silhouette club has a core bunch of keen BP shooters, probably many from the old club.
I tried VMA, but he can no longer get cases.
I managed to get two packets of loaded ammo(24 gauge brass) via upper Hutt gunshop, which in all likelihood were loaded by VMA anyhow.
Not cheap, however 20 cases should last me forever as its not likely to be fired all that much, and I don't think you need to resize the cases at all.
I never thought of roundball, thats probably a good option. I might investigate trying to bring in a .600 mould but roundball would be a good way to start.
Cheers,
WK

Sad about the Wanganui BP Club but its disappearance is unfortunately similar to other BP clubs around NZ.

I was a member a long long time ago. Likewise a member of a club in Taranaki.
In Wanganui we shot on the Putiki army range. That is until the army ceased to view civilian marksmanship favorably and they turfed us off.

Our annual shoot would attract heaps of shooters from all round NZ. The shoot started with a cannon shoot, maybe 8 or 10 cannons.

The Taranaki club shot on a range (mmm paddock) half way between Hawera and Eltham

There's an old boy Robin hulme still floating around I think was one of the founding members, and the Rees brothers.  By the time I came to town it was largely defunct. There is probably 12 or so people still bring their muskets out on a sunday arvo from time to time.
We did have a bp shoot once a year for awhile got quite a few out of towners in but even that seems to have gone by the way.
Now whenever I take one of my muzzloaders down ill always get some bloke turn up with his 7mm08 or something who will be fascinated with someone shooting such an old gun.
