I have a Garmin 64 ST, and am not overly impressed with Garmin topo lite maps. Does any one on here have any experience with other map programs. Which is the best most detailed map program between Freshmap, Topo4 GPS, Maptoaster, and any others which can be used with Garmin unit please ?

I've got the Garmin 64s which has a "tile" limit of 500 (Most devices have a "tile" limit of 100") which allows me to load up to 9 of the Garmin versions (.kmz files) of the standard NZ topo maps.

These maps give the same identical details as the topo maps and are way better than any standard Garmin type topo maps.

These maps can be downloaded from the below and I load them into the "custom maps" directory of the gps unit.

http://www.topomap.co.nz/NZTopoMap?v=2&ll=-41.004775,173.990479&z=6

Dont ask me what these tiles mean, but certainly restricts what can be done with the Garmin units.

They're talking picture tiles, each raster map is made of hundreds of picture tiles, you can generally only fit a certain ammount of tiles on your unit because of space constraints and unit speed limitations. The raster maps look better, but eat batteries.
Go with the vector maps, Map Toaster ($$) or MrPurples (free if you look hard online). My preference is Mr Purple as he's coloured them to match our standard Topo map colours.... and they're free  Wink

Or .. If you're computer savvy .....
I wrote these a few years back, Think it all still works  Huh
Tho he last one is largely obsolete now that Backcountry Navigator downloads it's own tiles

Oooo, Found an easy way to get LinzTopo maps (raster) on our Garmins.
Install Google Earth (if you don't already have it)....

Go here: http://www.topomap.co.nz/NZTopoMap?v=2&ll=-40.871988,175.521698&z=10
Up the top click 'More' -> 'Downloads'
Pan to the map you want , click it and then select Garmin custom map.
Open the KMZ file in Google Earth (or just download it)
If you open it in GE, right click on it (in the LH tree under Temporary places) and save it out somewhere.
Copy your KMZ to ya Garmin under a folder called 'CustomMaps'. Turn it on in ya settings. If it doesn't fit, turn some tiles off in GE and then re-save it out.

Raster looks way better, but is a tad battery hungry. Hope all that helps

(p.s. All that said I still use MrPurples tho) The one you're after is the second post in this thread below (i think) can't quite recall
