ive just bin using the free topo 50 but its pretty un reliable even if i pull up the map beforew i go into the area, im keen to pay just so i know it will be there when i want it, cheers

Yes, you download the map to your phone. It is always there, and your phone GPS works in flightmode. You pay for north island and south island separately. I got frustrated like you, and was skeptical. But when I bought it, it preformed better than I imagined.

I'm using NZ Topo50 in iphone. Works well. It was upgraded recently and can now switch between map and aerial photos. Really useful when moving through new areas.

using the app now its bloody great, I dont think ive got aerial photos though, how do ya find those?

Hit the circular icon on the bottom right. If I've done it right, there should be a screenshot here (haven't done it in a while).
Very useful app, almost unbelievably. Used it to track my route through the bush, even found the road to the lake when our driver forgot the way

i have a new phone now, an apple and i have the real view option, its not as detailed as google earth but still handy, great app!
