Day one of the 2020 duck season done and dusted.

Well, that's it team. The first weekend of the 2020 game bird season done and dusted and what a pearler it was!

High winds from the south, rain, mostly clear skies and (I assume) ducks everywhere. Not like the normal beach weather we get here - hot, sunny, calm.

Not a lot of shooters out this weekend, me included.

I am now enjoying a nice hot cup of coffee at home, enjoying the storm as it blows outside. Just like I did yesterday and for the last 7 weeks (was it only seven weeks? Seems longer / shorter / I have no idea any longer)

No. I haven't been hunting. I've been at home in suburban Wellington. I built a new maimai early this year, when going outside was allowed, and haven't seen it for nearly two months. I used the pattern from the fish and game website, and I have to be honest, it looks good! (if memory serves...)

But the anticipation is building. The gear is prepped and ready. The dog is laying at my feet, wondering what the hell is happening. And hopefully the ducks are getting fat and complacent on the feed I left in the feeder nearly two months ago (ok, it's probably empty by now).

How did you spend your opening weekend? Smiley

The delaying of opening weekend is actually going to work in my favor this season as all the ducks here just walk to the maize stack and feed, not even really flying was considering setting up layout blinds in front of the stack.
By the time we get to level 2 the stack will be closed and ducks will be on the move again, not to mention really busy time so a June opening suits me could be a new trend for me I think,
I'm not to fussed because its gona happen eventually

Yeah - the post was a bit tongue in cheek.  I always feel the season is a little too early, just based on the weather, so am not really feeling put out by the delay.

But the weather this weekend IS perfect, locally. Smiley

I recon June is a better time for the beginning on the duck season
The weather is generally too settled in May for ducks and it's a great time to be hunting Sika deer as there are a lot less people in the bush, you can get good weather and the Stags can still be vocal and rutting...

If it takes only one careless match to start a bush fire, how come it takes me a whole box to start a camp fire.

We built a mega maimai this year, something of a boyhood dream really, lockdown kicked in before we could add the finishing touches and paint it. It also happens that I live in a different region so I probably won't get to use it this year.

That sucks. Has the regional boundaries been sorted ? I live in the North Canty region but shoot in Central south island and have heard that the regions are more like what I would consider council districts which is more restrictive .
