Couriering a rifle ( my experience)

I sold a rifle to a guy in Auckland , I thought it would be a problem , but it wasn't too bad .
I gave him all my licence details and address etc , he filled in an online form and emailed it to his arms officer , The arms officer approved the sale etc and emailed me a copy of the completed form , which I printed off 3 copies, 1 for me , 1 went with the rifle , 1 was for the local dealer who sent the rifle to Auckland , the rifle cost $55 to courier , $10 for the dealer , $45 for the courier , the purchaser paid the  receiving shop $10 for the paper work  . The dealers are part of the Firearm Dealer Network (facebook ) which has been set up by various dealers across the country to help with the sale and movement of firearms . https://www.facebook.com/TheFirearmDealerNetwork/?
Click on this then scroll down for a dealer list .
These guys should be encouraged and thanked .
I couldn't find a courier to take ammo , only Toll and Fastway will carry firearms and only from a dealer to a dealer , and the sending dealer must have an account with the courier company , Toll will ship ammo in 5kg or less lots but once again from an account holder and most gun shops don't have accounts with them .

Shooting is the most fun you can legally have with your clothes on .

yip its getting tough/interesting but in reality it needed to. there were far to many stories of packages being left on door step that were ment to be signed for...and scallyways who follow couriers around just waiting for such oppertunities to grap something to hock off..... getting stuff couriered to my workplace rather than home has worked well in the past....gates are locked so couriers have to come during business hours...anything dropped off for staff just gets taken into office and held/handed over when staff come in.

I have had good experiences with the Dealer Network locally, but only as a receiver.
As long as everyone plays the game the system works well , although one sender had the dealer open the end of the package , drag the rifle out and inspect it then seal the end with a piece of tape. Needless to say the barrel was sticking out on arrival.... I suspect that after my phone call the sending dealer will be a little more particular if he opens another parcel. Which he didnt have to do in the first place anyway.

We setup the network to help out gun buyers and sellers move firearms around the country due to changes in courier policy, and also to counteract Hunting and Fishing's monopoly, and anti internet sales stance.

Its working well. Myself (55SIX), and Richard (Serious Shooters) administer the network. All we ask is that participants support the independent dealers. Maybe buy some ammo, optics etc while there in store.

Just a note on what was mentioned above about a sending dealer opening the package, they need to do this to sight the serial number on the gun for their dealers book.

In regards to how the network works, I've copied and pasted the instructions from our facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/TheFirearmDealerNetwork/posts/430099690880236

DEALERS DIRECTORY AND A GUIDE ON HOW TO USE

This is a guide only and each individual dealer may wish to do things differently in accordance with their interpretation of the Arms Act. If in doubt we encourage you to consult with your local Arms Officer. Our current interpretation is that any dealer who charges for a business transaction needs to write the mail order details into their book.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS NETWORK IS NOT TO BE USED BY NON PARTICIPATING DEALERS.

Step 1) Use the list of dealers below to find a dealer closest to the sender and one closest to the recipient.

Step 2) Obtain a mail order form for the transaction from the police. Confirm with your AO that they are ok to send the firearm dealer to dealer.

Step 3) Contact the dealers involved and confirm sending and receipt dealer delivery addresses.

Step 4) Take the gun and the mail order to the sending dealer. The sending dealer will record the mail order details in their book. They will then charge you for sending the firearm. The price on this is entirely at the discretion of the sending dealer.

Step 5) The sending dealer then sends the firearm and mail order to the recipient dealer.

Step 6) The recipient dealer contacts the buyer. They then then sight the licence of the buyer when the firearm is picked up.

PLEASE NOTE: WE ASSUME NO LEGAL OR FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE USE OF THIS NETWORK.

Epic, thanks Dijit, if I was sending a firearm as a gift to someone who is personally known to me and who has a licence, would I need the police form?

Yes still do the mail order form. Police are pretty quick with processing these. Then include a copy of the form with the gun being sent. That way if the receiving dealer wants a copy for his books then hes got one.
