Anyone else seen ducklings this early before?? Normally late September for us, but no, proud mum swimming around with an entourage of 8 this morning. Will have to go and bait up the traps again Wink

No ducklings here yet but lots sitting on nests.Seen swans in river with little fluffy ones thought thats abit early for them Smiley

A Guy down the end of the street has a street sediment pond on his property - he encourages Canada’s and any other gamebirds - usually 50 to 80 birds around
He saw a duck with 10 ducklings on Saturday - 5 ducklings on Sunday - so he caught them for hand rearing
Sunday afternoon he looked down from his house and saw 3 stoats swimming around after the ducks - I put a Doc250 and a Victor down there - I will chuck some better camoflage on them tomorrrow
Hard to believe the little buggars swimming around in broad daylight

would it not have been better to put a 22/250  Cheesy
  
It is much better to Hit the Animal in the right place, with a Rifle you can shoot well, then to hit it poorly with a Large Calibre..John Nosler

Starting to see a few clutch around now, so looks like it could be a good breeding season, as long as we dont get any floods.

Hardly any ducklings here on the hauraki plains would have to be the worst i have ever seen . It has been to dry no muddy puddles for them to feed in .4-7 ducklings per hen seems to be the average this season most other years its more like 9-14 . I,m thinking alot of ducks haven,t even breed this year don,t know if the late shooting season has anything to do with it. Sad

My Grey duck ducklings have been very successful this season: Mum plus nine right through till they are 80% the size of mum. And not one fatality. Several other broods have had varying success, but in general its been a good season down here.

Almost stood on some bumble bee sized ones way out in another paddock two days ago, so the breeding has been spread right out down CNI way. Dam is full to overflowing.

seen first broods taking flight the other day...funny as heck driving down paddock,off they waddle then wings get going and before they know it they 50 yards away crash landing.... some really good sized broods....in other places Mum is lucky to still have two left...the Parries on other hand all seem to have 8-10....goes to show the VALUE of having two parent family with BOTH parents there to share the load......us humans could learn from what are often referred to as "dumb ducks".
