I got a bow saw and a folding saw this morning, then got home and read this again and thought I have made some sort of mistake might take the folding saw back and get a silky. Can't believe I did that. Happy with my bancho bow saw though.
Ahhh right, just realised you guys were writing Silky Saws and not Silky Draws. It makes a lot more sense but I will have some explaining to do when my mail order arrives.
It's better to have loved and lost than to have paid for it and not liked it

My job is 'gardening' and that involves a lot of pruning, taking down live and dead trees, some reasonably big - and for the most of that I used a standard cross cut saw with hardened teeth. Some time back I got two Bahco 'peg tooth' bow saws - a 21" and 24". I found the 21" saw a bit of a toy, but the 24" is probably the best saw I've ever used. I've done a phenomenal amount of cutting with that on both green and dry wood - I use it almost every day. I've cut kanuka, akeake and dried pine, cedar and native logs I've had to roll over to get through - I haven't found a timber it wont cut. And I have yet to replace or sharpen the original blade.
I don't know the 'silky', I haven't used one, but were I going 'bush' that's probably what I'd take due to it's 'portable' size - the Bahco, while light is moderately bulky.

Giving this older post a wee bump...folding saw and machete all day for me personally. I have a cheap Coleman-brand folding saw that I bought from Walmart in the USA years ago, and it's going just as good as the day I bought it. As far as the machete goes, I'm rocking an Esee Junglas, which for those of you aren't familiar, is sort of a cross between a short-ish machete and large chopping blade. A bit on the expensive side but has an awesome kydex sheath and lifetime warranty. It absolutely powers through smaller branches, splits wood well and is just a really damn fun tool to use
