308 heavy bullets, who uses them and what powder load works for you?

I have a 308 with a 1:9.5 twist. I thought I would take advantage of this and use a heavier grain bullet. has anyone experimented with 175gr or heavier bullets? How did they go for you? I was planning on using them out to 200 but not much further (not a very confident shooter)..
Also I will be getting some ar2206h to power them. What loads have been working for people.

41grns 2208 behind a 180grn hornady round nose is my do the bizo bush load......it just works... out long I would be trying something 165ish....... me I use the poohseventy if thats what range I anticipate shooting at...have got a few 150grn loads that come walkies just in case...its nice when the lighter load prints group 3" high at hundy and the heavies are smack on..... 178gr eld-x are very accurate in my 1:12 twist 308, using 42.5gr of AR2208 which may be a bit on the hot side. I also use 170gr flat nose 30-30 projectiles pushed along by 40gr of 2208 for a bush load.
The 178s are doing 2565fps, the 170s are doing 2368fps which is still quite a bit quicker than out of a 30-30.

Hmmmm...I was thinking 180gr. The eld-x look very good, getting a bit pricey though. I am still seeing what loads my rifle likes before I commit to a 100 of them.  Smiley

Fwiw, I reckon that at .308 Win velocities with those bullet weights & at those ranges, you'd be as well served with a bullet like Hornady Cor-Lokt or Sierra Pro Hunters. A low drag bullet like the eld-x is a bit unnecessary imho.

You can push the 170 grain Hornady flatnose up to 2500 fps and it will still work well. I used to do it, after corresponding with the Hornady techs over the velocity window for the bullet.
The bullet mushrooms up early because of the flat nose, and then wears the mushroom off, penetrating well, and it either exits or you get the shank of the bullet back from the other side.

Poodle, I use 180 gn partitions and hornady spire points for sambar in the .308 win. My load is 46.5 gns of WW748 in a PMC or Win case with a CCI magnum primer. 2650 fps out of a 21" tube. That not far off hand loaded 30-06 velocities and very close to factories. Very accurate load.

I used to use the Hornady 180gr RN behind 43gr of 2206H in my Savage 99. I think 2206H is a little better than 2208 for beavier projectiles, not a lot in it though.
