Reduced Youth Loads for .308win Chronographed?
Feb 24th, 2019 at 7:28am

I have a couple of 308 Bushpigs.  I am now going to reload a slightly reduced load Sierra 125gn FNHP and SP for my son to use on Goats and Deer.

Does anyone have chronographed results?  Using 60% of maximum start load for 2206H would be 29.4gn.  I am thinking of starting at 32-36 gn range.

Please share any other reduced loads/projectiles on this thread.

I chronyed some 170gr flatnose (designed for 30-30, like the 125s) pushed by 40 grains of 2208 today, I will post when I have looked at the data. I think tjey were high 2400's. Not really a reduced load though.
I also did a range of charge weights of Trailboss/151gr cast bullet loads. Geez are they pleasant to shoot! Very mild recoil and reduced noise even though they weren't subsonic.

The 170 flat nose with 40gr of 2208 were doing 2370fps out of a 24 inch barrel. They are probably doing more like 2000 out of a 30-30 so could happily be slowed down a lot.
The Trailboss loads with 151 cast hollow points ranged from 8gr giving 1140fps to 10gr giving 1300fps. With my cases I should be able to go up to 14gr of Trailboss, which at a guess might have them doing 1600-1700fps

the 125grn sierras are just plain ol naaaasty in .308   we used 748 and were about half way between start and maximum....being a light projectile recoil wasnt an issue anyway...2 others worth serious consideration are the speer 130grn flatbased hp (handgranades) and nosler 125grn ballistic tip..dont own or use a chrony....dont see the need,a load either works or it dont, speed is irrelevant unless you stretching the barrel.

Trail Boss goes some what erratic at near case capacity in my .308's 12.0 grains was ok but at 15.00 I got a shotgun patterns
One of the Forum members shoots the 151HP at 1630fps exit holes
are quite impressive,

If you want a bullet to shoot faster say 1500fps to 1900fps I have a 170grain pointed bullet cast with the same lead mix,
Also I am thinking about getting a 173 grain FP mould designed for the 30/30  google Lyman 311041 if there is enough interest

Thank you for your reply.  When you say Nasty do you mean excellent Terminal ballistics?  I have loaded 125gn FNHP #2020 at 34gn 2206H.  Estimated velocity (thanks Custom Cartridges Taupo) in my bushpig is 1940 FPS.  Both Children have fired it and are confident with it.

I usually do the 170gn FN with 42gn 2206H  (this also works with the 150gn FN too).  I am transferring .308 action from my full size synthetic into their cut down stock from their .223.  Then adjust sight 10 clicks up and they are all good to go.  Will report back after we get out Goat shooting.

All the 30-30 projectiles i have used in the 308 have been devastating when they hit something. It's not often you find the hip joint of a goat several meters from the goat.
I use the Sierra 125 FNHP in my 30-30 with a mid-range load of 2208, they go well, my last shot did this to a tree and still killed the fallow deer behind it.

similar terminally to the sierras...but yes naaasty as in they really open up fast and make a mess.
they work at 7.62x39mm speed too.

I have done this for the kids, using a 150gn projectile.

I started at 30gr 2206H and velocity was all over the place 1800fps to 2050fps.

Bumped the load up to 35gr and velocity was 2200 - 2300.

Bumped the powder up up to 36 and then 37.  37 gr gives 2500fps, 30/30 performance, I figure that it is good enough to point at an animal.

I have used 38 grains of AR2206H under the 150 grain Interlock as a low recoil target load for some years. My 308 has a 22 inch barrel with a longish throat and the load chronographs 2380 fps. I have also used the 155 grain Frontier plated bullet over 32 grains of the same powder for 1910 fps which would be a cheap practice load for your son. This shoots about 50 mm low and 40 mm right of the above load in my rifle.

Thanks Everyone for sharing their ideas.  I Have had issues with the 125gn FN feeding and have now gone to a 130gn Speers Hotcor (a cross between a SP and a FN - a longer more aerodynamic shape) using 36 gn 2206H OAL 2.53 inch.   The kids have got good groupings off the Bipod so I am thinking this will be their load for goats and their first deer.
