Cheers Sako, that's what I figured the outcome might be.  I've not fished that river before, how was it for you?

Owhango or national park wil have heaps as its out of ski season..

Astonishingly not.
Best to pre book National park.
Me and the we fella were driving to Wellington and cut the trip in half with a little fishing over NY period.
4 rooms left at national park on wotif when we went through.  both times.
hundreds of folk there during the week doing the Southern crossing! not many Kiwis around either.
Lots of campers at 42 traverse carpark too.
Times are changing.....

There are fish. Not big. Try Kakahi. Go thru the hole in the wall and fish upstream towards Owhanga. We met the Mayor of Kakahi. Nice bloke. A unique part of NZ. Look on YT the Loose Loops vid. Has clip on rafting down from the 42 bridge. Want to get into junction of Whaka/Whanga but time will not allow. We are heading into Paradise in 2 weeks. Taken us 13 months to cut a track in.Guarantee there will be no vids on it. Hopefully it will remain unspoilt. Sad because the Te Hoe was like that 10 years ago but suddenly declined with the chopper pressure and catch and kill.Best.

An alternative piece of water for you. May scoot up there tomorrow on way home if time allows.

also was my home for many years. one thing I can tell you is there is no such thing as the queens chain in that river, so ask before you go, awesome people, but if you don't ask expect an ear full. neat river, neat people.
