Bit hut work

exNZFS volunteer hut group did a bit of work on Carkeek hut recently.
I went into Carkeek hut in the middle of the Tararuas† with mate started culling with in the 1960s,† Restored to exterior to orginal NZFS orange (actually was tangerine). The hut is essentially the same design as when built in the 1960s, but with internal wood burner. The open fire originally used was difficult to keep going being on the bushline, and with dead wood sources dissapearing. Bit of work left to do on a water leak around the rear window.
On a few trampers been there over the winter, and no hunters. Popular place during the Roar and sometimes during the summer. Its about a 2 day walk in, at least, for most. Can be done in one day. Well worth the effort though, best tops in the North island, IMO. Most fly in and miss it.

Aim is to keep these old NZFS huts going in as close as possible to original design.

Went for a hunt, not much sign about, WARO operator has been bit busy in the Tararuas lately. Did manage to get some stag meat to take home.

The hut few years after built,† when based there a bit in 1967.

Good work! out of interest how did sign compare to when you were first in there? Did you hunt the tops or the bush for a stag?
