Hi Fellow Hunters / Huntresses ..  I'm looking for a place to hunt some Feral Goats.  I'm hopeing to get some goat meat for Christmas to share with 4 other families.  Last weekend I travelled to kaikoura .. but had no success.  Any help to find a location closer to christchurch would be much appreciated.  I have searched the DOC website but most of their suggestions are too far away or there are too many hikers to shoot safely in those areas.

There is a few pockets with goats around the Christchurch, especially on Banks Peninsula but most of them are to my knowledge on private land. Closest public spot I knew was North Branch of Waihao River but that got poisoned lest year I think so didn't bother to check there again...  Sad But once you drop anywhere on WestCoast side theres dozens of them right in the riverbed of just every larger river you can find... Kaikoura used to be great but again - DOC gave them consistent thinning over the years and now they are mostly on private but with some local knowledge guys here should be able to pinpoint good spots I hope Smiley

If you can be bothered to go all the way to Richmond Forest area then I can send you little map where they are, but its all bush hunting...  Wink

Goat is so underrated here in NZ while its a great eating if you know what to shoot (and NOT) and how to handle the meat after!  Cool

Yep, we westerners forget that more people on this planet eat goat than eat lamb or mutton. Get the right one and they are delicious.
