The upper Rangitata bridge is closed due to concerns about erosion on the northern end.

FROM ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL.

5.30 PM UPDATE: Route 72 (or Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road) is CLOSED over concerns of erosion damage on the northern side of Rangitata River Bridge. Crews are expected to re-evaluate damage tomorrow morning when water flow drops and determine appropriate repair measures. Travelers should use alternate route via Hinds Arundel Road, to Ealing Montalto Road, to State Highway 1.
