Just a walk

Did walkabout in the Tararua's other week. No gun taken, was getting some exercise and checking some huts.

Some places will look same as other reports, because they are. Havent got tired of walking there yet
Went in from Kiriwhakapapa to Cow Creek then on to Arete Forks. Was pretty murky going, will rain all day. Got there bout 2pm, lit fire, had brew, then a nap

Volunteer members of exNZFS group werein there during the winter, felling regen beech around the hut. One had fallen of the hut roof/chimney, so they had to go before a bigger one did the same. Spent bit of time splitting wood

We onto to Carkeek hut, via head of Waingawa river, over Tarn Ridge , down to head of Waiohine, then up onto Carkeek ridge, then down to the hut. Walked in murk for most of the trip.

Hut was bit mouldy, no use over the winter, so got wood burner going and hut was soon warm. Mate was supposed to come in so waited couple days, but didnít happen. Cut firewood and scrubbed hut out, measured up for repairs to do in November,

then went back to Arete Forks via along Carkeek Ridge all the way to Waiohine Pinnacles, then down to the hut. Local Robby 44 operator had been doing a bit of WARO, with 5 gut bags seen along the tops. Cloud the whole way, no views seen.

Back at Arete Forks after leaving the murky tops, the weather cleared and was perfect. That evening the Robby44 was back, spent bout 30 minutes above the hut for couple of deer. That night about 9pm, heard chopper flying around tops of Arete Bivvy. Went on for bout half an hour. Found out later it was Air Force in the big NH90 machine, doing training flights.

Next day, the trudge of about 7 hours back out to Kiriwhakapapa.

Heading back in† during November, for hut repaint and bit of hunt

PS, posting images is a PIA

It's more than Just a Walk, it's an adventure into some of the remotes parts of the Tararuas
