Yep Opotiki Mongrel Mob grow right through the gorge- your best bet is to talk to some of the locals living near Waiata and Wairata to find out where’s safe etc - stop and chat with the cafe people at Wairata ( near the old school) on SH2 and see where that leads you.
DOC in Opotiki May also be able to help in this respect.

See plenty of pig hunters vehicles parked in the gorge- dunno about over nighters though.

You can park at Redpaths place at Wairata.
They’re good about it as long as you show some basic respect and shut gates etc.
I’ve parked there about 1/2 dozen times and have never had any trouble.

Ive always wondered Radar, does the average dope grower climb hills to make a patch? Or do they tend to stick to the flats?
I know during a dry summer they have to carry water to their plants.
Can’t imagine the average mobster with a skin full of dope climbing any hills???

Being local I still do not leave my vehicle on the road over night Even with a WHC sticker.Best piece of mind  at Redpaths or possibly Moanui .Have not heard of any vandalism of late.

Re where they plant dope, you’d be surprised where it grows and how far from water sources. I’ve been involved in planning and operational stuff and trust me ridgelines are a good opportunity even if they’re a good km away from water.
