I just bought a Marlin 223 off Trademe on a bit of a whim and picked it up today. Paid $400 so not a big risk. Looks tidy enough with cheap 4-9 scope.
I have 2 thoughts.
1. Cheap wallaby rifle.
2. Deer rifle for my boy (14yrs)
Anyone got one and found ammunition it likes?
Whats best of the cheaper ammo for wallabies and hares etc..?
Whats best of the good stuff for deer?
Thanks in advance.

hornady 50 pack 55grn stuff is pretty darn good. it good enough to use for all game...buy a box of premium stuff for deer is it make you feel a bit more secure..Barnes 50 grn are awesome on deer,if you can find it in factory you will be set.

Mine works for me, I have not bothered to work up loads for it, just use suggested starting loads and it works well.  Just using 55 gn bullets for wallaby, nothing else has walked out in front yet (although in front of a witness I missed first a wallaby and then a rabbit last time I tried it out, always in front of witnesses of course).

We're talking groups running around 20 mm to 30 mm at 100 m, five shots of course.

No fault of the rifle, just the idiot nut holding the butt.

Bloody good, regret selling mine. They are a 1in9 twist barrel also.
Mine used to shoot super accurate with the 55gr Sierra Blitz King, i loaded it with W748 back then. id do 3-5 shots in .25" and a 10 shot string without cooling down under 1"

the cheap 55gr hornady spire points also shot around the .5" mark
