Either it's a big conspiracy in an attempt to discredit the anti 1080 crowd and the birds did in fact die from 1080 poisoning.
Or....  it's some fuctard prepared to do anything to get their point across.
My money is on the latter.

Unless birds or for that matter, animal samples poisoned by 1080 are brought down very quickly after being recovered,  to at least -20C or more, the 1080 will be virtually undetectable within a few days. I think it likely the birds are road kill or somesuch, but it will be yet another panic button for the spin doctors to have to address  ;D

The whole article was designed to show that 1080 protestors are thugs - people wearing skull and crossbones, birds bludgeoned, innocent children dragged along and forced to watch this mayhem.
Nothing positive there at all - and shame to Trevor Mallard in resorting to that bullshit.
That protest must have stung Government - or they'd have just let it slide.

And I wonder if the bird 'bludgeoning' is similar to 'blunt force trauma' commonly applied to new born calves (bobby calves) whereby they are smacked on the back of the head by a hammer - an act fully sanctioned by the 'powers that be'.

That's been illegal except for in an emergency since 2016, and was prohibited by the Code of Welfare for some time prior to that.

Good to hear that, because not so many years ago I went over the Waikato and picked up 14 bobby calves and they had all been killed using that method.

Probably not beyond the statute of limitations if you wanted to report it. The change 2 years ago was to increase the consequences for anyone caught doing it. Certainly not sanctioned.

Listening to the right dishonorable Trevor Mallard it sounds like there has been no toxicology or autopsy done yet. Just a passing observation from an expert.
Funny how he brought it up just at the same time the judge in Auckland is making a decision on the Hunua 1080 debacle.

I doubt kereru or seagulls would even eat 1080 though.
More likely road kill that were brought in as props.

Got a strong suspicion he probably had been reported because he told me he had to take them behind the barn to do the deed as the 'do-gooder' across the road kept reporting him.

The consequences were obviously ........... vast.

Additional witnesses can help. There really are some proper do-gooders out there. I know one farmer who repeatedly has people turn up at his house with lambs in the car because 'Mum ran off'.

The press were told that 3 of the birds were from a 1080 drop zone and the rest were road kill and were only there to make a point..The press and Mallard have chosen to twist the facts.... its an all out war at moment with the press showing their true colours..

Isn't passing a bird killed by a car as a victim of 1080 poisoning twisting the facts????  Roll Eyes
