18650 verses 18700 batteries

I thought you could bet 18650 as either protected or unprotected, but I see there is now reference to an 18700 being the 18650 battery with protection circuit that's 5 mm longer.

Is the 18700 different to the 18650 protected battery??

Could be very little difference. 18650 batts so-named because they were 18mm diameter and 65mm long. Lately they have crept out to 68-70mm long for protected cells. Could be just a branding catch-up - though I don't have any 18700s to check.

Yeah I have found the good Panasonics don't fit some 18650 devices because they are too long and closer to 70mm
