Retiring soon and would like to have a go at fishing this river, have spinning gear but what to use?? Also have fly rod and floating line this any good??? Are there any fish here??

It used to be good many years ago in the 80s  last tryed there about 5 years ago not even a strike.When i drive threw there you never see anyone fishing.But theres got to be fish there.The lower  reachs of the  Ohinemuri is full of koi carp. Smiley

Agreed, the fishing has seen better days.
There have been issues with water quality, poaching, algae etc etc over the years which have taken their toll.
However the entire Waihou catchment is chocka block with fish and there are always some in the Ohinemuri.  Rainbows and Browns are present all year.
Access is great and the water has plenty of places to try different methods.
Spinning in the big pools lower reaches, dries in summer, nymphs all year in the runs.
A nymph under as dry in summer when the flow is low and the slime is high always produces.
there will be opps to fish around the whitebaiters way downstream too.

If you really have some time on your hands, explore the catchments.  they hold heaps of fish per pool and are a little more back country with out the long drive.  Lots of good spots on the Ohinemuri are next to a bloody busy road!

I'm sure there is a Fish and Game brochure for this area(Bop?), i had a go fishing when i used to be up that way,some of the streams running through forestry had nice fat fish in them too.
