For the modern gentleman, it’s hard to go past the Ruger No. 1. For those with more “vintage” tastes, perhaps a Martini Enfield or a Springfield 1873? Those would be my picks.

Have hunted with both of those, plus many other 'vintage' arms and have never really felt hampered by having just that one shot. The Ruger No 1 is about as good as you'll get, nicely made, stylish, comes in an assortment of modern cartridges and takes a scope straight out of the box. They also have a bloody good resale value - I've got a mate looking for one right now.
If you want a breakdown single shot you can't go past a Blaser K95. Breaks down like a shotgun and the scope can be removed and replaced with no loss of accuracy. I have had mine apart, then put back together and shot a 3.5" group at 550yds. The only problem with them is the price.

I don't know if Glenn is still making these ,but if you want a NZ made rifle and $$$'s are not a limiting factor have a look at http://www.sorokarifle.com/index.html
For a small handy takedown rifle I'd get a Thompson Center Contender or Encore ,My mate had Contender with a 22lr barrel , a 223 barrel and a 7-30 Waters barrel , a very versatile and handy package. My choice would be a TC Encore pro hunter in 280 Rem or 7mm08

I had a No1 lightweight in 7x57 , it shot the first 2 shots touching, dead on point of aim from a cold clean barrel, at 100 m.The next shot would be 1" high the next 2"high and the next 3" high , luckily the first shot was the only one needed . One other "fault" was that the ejected case would hit the safety catch and bounce back into the action .

May I ask what the primary need for the singleshot/takedown requirement is? ie why?
Poaching, rafting and shoving your gun in a pack when walking public domain or motorbiking to your up country spot springs to mind - and I can say that because I've been stopped and questioned a few times doing that last one.

Nothing sneaky, I just like the idea/simplicity of a single shot, and the breakdown as I travel quite a bit with my job and like the idea of being able to package the rifle up in a small case

The reason I ask is you can get some quite compact rifles now, like the Ruger American Ranch with the 16" barrel and a couple of other brands with similar options. My 300blk is 90cm long.
