My roar hunts started about the 18th March, with a few recce trips,i'm lucky that I live locally so can have a look every now and then. When my oldest grandson turned 13 I decided I would start taking him in the roar trips. This year he and I went for a morning hunt.We were hunting North block Pureora,as we crossed a river we heard a low moan above us.G/son in tow ,we find the stags track to the river,so follow it up.As always the wind is swirling ,but manageable. We get up onto a level bench and hear our quarry about 200 metres above us.Its so early in the roar that he's being cagey ,with just audible moans,g/son in front with the suppressed .243 we get to within 40 odd meters..a picture is worth a thousand words so..

Later on in the month we had run out of options about 11 am ,when we heard a roar that sounded like a spiker,so with me in tow armed with my .308 blr ..g/son Taylor decides he wants to do the stalk.I was a pure spectator,he sussed the wind eventually getting above the stag.Taylor gives a loud, very human roar..no response, then Taylor hears the something walking through thru the bush, then spies the stag ...who is cautiously looking for the roarer...clearly identified he pops it in the neck. The .308 doesn't take prisoners.

Last week I went for a wander on my own, another windy day ,I am mooching up an old pulling track.I hear qite a loud juvenile roar about 60 metres further up.The wind is hopeless ,so I stay where I am and give him a roar, which is met with an enthusiastic reply. The bush below me is choked with supplejack,if he's coming for a look ..he will hopefully come down the pulling track.I sit with my back to big tawa tree, which will hopefully shield my wind.I hear him again.so I turn the the roaring horn towards the tree, put my hand partially over the end and give a lazy, can't be bothered roar.My theory is its going to hard for him to pinpoint.I set up my video camera and wait. Not long and he's ther,a nice young stag.Uneven head, but still potential. He thinks he's co*k of the walk and struts right in,bugger me he stops on cue and roars for the camera.I'm thinking ...how close do I let him come before spooking him,the wind eventually does it when he's 6 metres away.I can't get the grin off my face and keep playing the video to make sure it was real.

The last hunt with Taylor ,we went to a block of pines. We arrived at about 4pm ,heard a roar and 2 shots,so we wandered down a track in the pines to find a poacher gutting his deer.

He threw the whanau land b/s etc,i just said no its private land, you need to see the farm manager for permission.Taylor can't believe the guys attitude,i just reply...welcome to the otherside of hunting. Happy hunting, identify your target and enjoy the outdoors .Bruce.
