Projectile for 270 WSM

Hi guys,

whats a good projectile that ticks the following boxes, please?

- Distance from 5 to 400m
- Mainly red deer but the odd fallow, goat and pig

Starting to reload for him but have no experience with 270 WSM myself. At the moment he is using the 130gr SST from Hornady but shot a stag in the neck from 10m this roar which went down but jumped up again and he lost him due to projectile exploding on the surface leaving a nasty gash.

Cheers,
JaSa

A friend uses 130 accubonds in his 270WSM, I used it to shoot a hind at 500yds. Might have been getting a bit low in velocity by then, good hit in the centre of shoulder (which exited) but the deer stumbled down the hill a way before dying.

150grn partition...best of both worlds, soft front to expand and hard rear to penertrate....and WTF was he doing chasing close range stags/bush stalking with a rapid expanding load ????? big and heavy all the way for that type of work and save the lighter stuff (if its accurate in your rifle) for open country. my last 2 deer with the .270 win went down quick smart with boring old chest shots from boring old 140 grn hornady interlocts, both were 300ish yards away.

even the std poohseventy has always had reputation for blowing up light projectiles at close range, add the extra velocity of larger case and you have to be a bit cleaver with projectile choice....if he is recoil sensitive a 110 grn barnes could be another option that would tick those boxes.......but dont expect it to be magic out at the far end of that range,it will do the job but the 150 partition should be more emphatic Wink

Hmmm This is where a bit of discipline is required. Bloody hard to do but no animal deserves to be subjected to careless shooting. I have done it as has likely everyone on the forum.

I vote for the 150 partiton per Micky duck. They will work.

Thanks for all your replies.
Anyone used the Berger VLD or Sierra bullets in this caliber?
