Powder for 19” .284?
Jul 21st, 2018 at 6:39pm

I’m going to buy dies and an expanding mandrel for necking up 6.5-284 brass and now I need to decide on what load to try develop. Rifle will be finished next week hopefully. Tikka T3x 708 reamed out to 284 with 19” barrel etc.

What are the best options? I’m keen to get the most performance I can from the rifle. I see reloader 17 seems to be pretty popular?

Cheers.

Not sure why you need an expanding mandrel as we just run Lapua 6.5/284 brass through the sizing die and it's done!

As for powder... RE17 if you can get your hands on it otherwise AR2209

Who's doing the work on your rifle?

The neck sizing die or FL sizing die?

Daniel Ward Allan (NZ Armourer) in Waiouru is doing it for me.

I'm using Forster Dies and I think it's the neck sizing die... either a NK of FL sizing die will work.

Give it a try  Cool

Are you planning on a suppressor? Just thinking that a 284 and 19" barrel will be generous with the noisy stuff.

If you are confidant reloading try Vithavouri N160. It is a bit slower but will work in that case. It meters really really well and will be very consistent across temperatures and batch to batch. Make sure you have the right load data on hand before you start and start low!!!!! Patience is your friend.

Yup definitely suppressed. It’s got a DPT on it.

Yep, dies with a tapered expander ball work good. Gunworks recommended the RCBS ones

So if I just get an RCBS or Redding two die set (seater and full length die) I should be right?

Yep!

Just lube the case like you would with any other case and run it through the sizing die and job done!

I couldn't believe how simple it was when i first started sizing my Lapua brass... i thought i'd need a special die and thought i'd try this first and it worked perfectly.  Cool

Dies with tapered expanders work well, the short ball shaped ones not so good. The only reason I used a purpose designed expander mandrel was so that I could neck turn b4 my first firing. The mandrel was specific to my neck turner.

Yep 6.5, that's a level of proper case prep beyond my small brain...I would go there if I had internal donut or tight chambering though.

19 inch barrel sounds like a happy medium. My 22inch 284 sits at home for all but 1 summer tops trip per year.

How tight is the neck chamber in your 284s? I read a thread on another forum about the standard .322 neck vs modern brass going better in a tighter .317 neck. I’m having mine reamed to .317
