Found out yesterday while leaving Pureora Forest that an old icon of the area had passed about six months ago. A man who worked for Endeans mill, carted native logs out of tracks passing as roads and knew how to work a saw and a blade (missing finger to prove it). But his legacy, for me, was his area knowledge and love of hunting, often on horseback. A great dog worker and a fan of the 6.5 Swede, Joe was a little guy with a parade ground voice and in his characteristic drawl, could be heard talking two clearings away. Joe was very helpful when it came time to write my book and he always had a smile and a kind word for my kids. He will be missed....
