I've been meaning to ask ye old sages on the FishinHunt forum about a deer I've heard in the Kaimanawa's two years in a row - it was in the same area both years.
It's deep in Sika country, but this sounds like a bear (which it obviously isn't).
It doesn't sound like any Youtube Red's roaring. It is a brutal, angry "I'm going to kill you" sound... If I didn't know better, I would think it was a bear. This year it was with Sika Hinds - I heard them chirping as they descended the bush valley after the male got bored of me. Never got to see it though.
I've never actually hunted Reds... just Sika and Fallow. So don't have a reference to compare it to.
Anyone got a link to a Red deer making that kind of sound?
Kind regards

Mule deer were liberated at Runanga Hawkes bay in 1905, Records say Bill Axbey possibly recorded the last sighting of Mule deer in about 1950 North of Taihape, worth considering?
I think Axis or chittal may have been liberated as well, I know they were released in Goodwood Bush Oamaru in 1867 , but were apparently shot out by 1925, maybe some were released in the North island?
But They sound nothing like a bear

Mangaroa block - Helisika.... It's an interesting block. Half of it covered in impenetrable Manuka, the half that isn't is littered with snowfall damage.... Been there twice so only just figured out a few money spots... but going somewhere elsewhere next year because we are (stupid) wanting a new challenge.
I've only hunted Sika for about 7 years... so am a novice.
Heard the typical single call and hee haw a gazillion times. 3 years ago heard the Sika "scream". Told my mates about it back at camp... demonstrated the "scream" and had a Stag immediately single call in reply across the valley...
But hadn't heard the deep "RRROOOOAAAAR" until last year. Then heard it again this year... up closer along with deep grunts....
So wondering if it is the mystery that is Sika... or if it is a RED - which I've never hunted so not quite sure about the various sounds they make...
Regards

Reds can make calls that sound very similar to Japs as well. Last years roar I heard a animal going off which had all the signs of being a Jap, only trouble was that I was in the southern part of the Urewera.

Pretty sure there’s Sika around Te Hoe if you were that far south.
