Weld to an action?
Jun 22nd, 2018 at 11:32pm
Print Post
I’m wishing to fit a 2 piece picatinny rail to the top of a stainless Sako 85 to give me more scope mount options but without covering the ejection port of the rifle. I haven’t been able to find suitable dovetail compatible options so welding is starting to become appealing. Is this idiocy or can it be achieved without compromising action integrity?

Tier one did make a 2piece picatinny for sako dovetail, gun city chch stocked them.

Burris also did the same 2piece rail and I think if you hunt round on ebay usa or the likes, theres an outfit called valada that also make a 2 piece sako mount. All these mounts slide straight into your dovetails....

Cant believe you put welding and Sako in the same sentence.
Im a Sako owner and that made me wince.
Must be a better alternative.

If the mount is a different material to the action there’s your first problem.
Tig welding might not weaken the action too much, but I think there’d have to be a better option.
Probably be difficult to sell the rifle too.

if you are determind to go down this path...try 2 pot araldite instead......that way one day later on you will be able to chisel it off and keep integrty of rifle intact.... you must be able to source product to do the job somewhere....

Drill and tap the top of the action? That's what they've done with the T3.

I once did a very small welding job on a stainless sako action, it went well, I would absolutely not attempt what you are thinking, distortion of the auction would probably be such that the bolt wouldn't fit. We weld stainless only in our workshop, I wouldn't recommend it at all.

You could always get a 1 piece rail/dovetail adapter made.   Not the cheapest but you'll get exactly what you want.

Beretta owns Sako and Burris , Burris make 2 piece tactical bases to fit Sakos .

send it to Cobus at guntechnz, he will make you a rail for the rifle. He is very well priced too. He might even not need you to send the rifle if he has the dimensions.
