Sniffing out carcass?

Hi guys,

I shot and lost a red stag last Saturday, there was no blood trail, only found a small bit of bone covered in blood about 30m away from the shot. My only hope now is to go back and sniff him out. Will 1 week in Canterbury winter be enough or will it take longer to really start smelling? Don't have access to a dog.

Cheers

Went (accidentally) into a block that got 1080 two weeks prior and came across a stag that was just starting to decompose. Pretty much walk right past him until I got a nose full and spotted the body in a ground fern patch 3m away.
From that I would say you need to wait at least 3-4 weeks until they get real smelly this time of the year.

Good luck finding him!

Cheers,
JaSa

Thanks for the advise guys, I went back didn't find him. Found my arrow though straight pass through (broadside). Broadhead munted covered in hair. Really steep/thick bush so he is probably there somewhere unfortunately.

On another note I had a shot at a hind front on decided not to take it. Does anyone take front on shots? I watched a guy hunting reds this roar on YouTube and he took a lot of front on shots which is the most common shot during the roar.

Thanks for your help
Ben.
