Colorado elk

Hi, I am looking at hunting elk in Colorado. Any information or advice around processes etc would be appreciated. What have people done regarding the hunter education qualification. It appears that an NZ firearms licence might be sufficient. I would be hunting public land. It looks like Colorado is one of the better states to hunt relatively cheaply and on public land.

Thanks

I can't help you out much, but have you heard of rokslide its a forum that I would be pretty sure someone on there could help you out. I think its mainly targeted to western USA hunting.

I know the tag system pretty well and here is my advice:
You should apply for a hunters ID on the Colorado Fish and Game website.
I did the hunters education on line but you can probably get around it by calling the Colorado Fish and Game when you get your hunters ID.
CO has both Over the Counter and draw elk tags.† Draw tags are better tags.
CO also has OTC archery pronghorn tags.
You can get better draw tags with preference points.†
Idaho has OTC elk tags.† And draw tags with no points so your odds are the same as everyone else but the draw closes in a couple of days.
Wyoming has draw elk.† I have hunted public land elk there and it was good.

Give me a call if you have any questions - 021 0309461.

Thanks for the help. Got my hunter account set up and am now looking at where and when. Public land elk next year and if a late tag comes up it might be mulie or whitetail this year. Will see if that is possible. Am working through it now. I might call you for a chat CB. Many thanks. Cant wait to get over there. Time for a new adventure. Really want to see and hear elk bugle in their natural environment.

Good stuff sneaka. Donít think youíll be able to get a deer tag in CO this year as they are all draw.

I got a high country deer tag in CO draw so heading over in Sept.

What a mission getting a leftover licence.  The Colorado Parks and Wildlife website was taking about 10 minutes per click to load. I phoned the call line at least every couple of minutes for the first 45mins with the line busy the whole time. And then the block I was wanting sold out.

Never mind OTC licences go on sale tomorrow

Sounds painful Aaron.  I decided i will also stick to OTC tags.  Sitting in front of a computer at 3am trying and missing out on a tag didnt seem like fun!

My plan in future is to apply for a tag, rather than just buying a point, so I can go in the leftover draw.

Hi Guys. Have read this thread with interest. I had an Elk Hunt (non-resident tag) arranged for this November in Alberta, but after some further due diligence I am not happy with the quality of elk in Alberta and so have pulled the pin. (The Mule Deer there are however VERY good!).

So I am now planning on an Elk Hunt in the Lower 48 for next year.

Do any of you knowledgeable folk have a US Outfitter in Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho or Montana you could personally recommend, to assist me with obtaining a Tag/s, cutting through the US red tape and guiding this hunt in 2020?

Many thanks.
