Big increase in predator control in Budget 2018

Saw this announced today:

Quote:
The Government is investing more than $81.2 million over the next four years in predator control, which will result in the largest area ever protected against predators on an ongoing basis.

If you thought Battle for our Birds was significant in the past, this is possibly up to 3-4 times as large:

Quote:
The new money will allow predator control on an extra 600,000 ha of public conservation land each year, compared with the approximately 200,000 ha per year that DOC currently has ongoing funding for.  It will also provide greater efficiencies through multi-year planning and contracting with suppliers.

I guess it means less areas for WARO, at least

No doubt we will have a lot to talk about on the forum then.  Smiley

And when they have wasted that 80 million dollars, and there are still 75 million possums running around out there, and they have also poisoned a whole heap more "Kiwi", "Kea" "Kaka" and fark knows how many other endangered spices.
Who will they blame then & what will the do next????????????????

Dept of Conservation or Dept of dumb c--ts?

Plenty of funding for them to undertake ground based control work then... yea right.

I hope they use a good portion of this for r& d for new technology but I think we all know a few chopper companies bank accounts are about to swell

I'm not convinced 1080 helps bird life...from my exoeriences im leaning the other way... our hunting party this roar in Haast were all taken back by the lack of sound and sightings of birds....trapping and 1080 done in this block extensively....
I can walk blocks with no 1080 or trapping done and the bird life is vibrant and alive and well!

Best thing as recreational hunters we can do is get on the repel train as a group and stand strong

Agree. With this Government in place, and this Conservation Minister and now this funding, the foreseeable future is going to be about making the best we can of large increases in aerial 1080 alongside the other control.

The problem is, we have very little political clout given the way some hunters have spoken, loudly and frequently, about DOC/Greens/Forest and Bird - current Conservation Minister is part of all 3. Politically we aren't important to her. So that has to change.

Yep more 1080 dumping for sure. I hunt in an area (private) with only bait stations and the bird life is magic. I could imagine if it was bombed with 1080 it would go silent and also kill heaps of other animals & birds. Our friends had a small holding by the Ruahines and it got bombed and everything died including eels, frogs and birds but there's still possums and rats about. Who the fuk lets DOC keep BS'ing the majority of New Zealanders that they're going to get NZ predator free? What drugs are they on?

Oscar NZDA need to up their game to swell numbers quickly. A lot of people would join on the net but one still has to print off a form to join. Its actually a piece of piss to make an online membership application and payment by cc card  immediately without having to go through the hoops of downloading a document, filling it out, storing it, then uploading it. That was modern in the 90s.  Grin

People are lazy in this busy world. People cant even post a photo on the forum anymore because it involves focusing on some simple instructions for 5 minutes to learn how to do it. As soon as it comes to having t print something off, and then fill it out an scan it..  Roll Eyes and upload it, youve already lost their attempt to join simply in support.
