Central Otago Turkeys?

Hey everyone, long time reader first time poster.  This is my second full season waterfowl hunting and I have really caught the bug!  I've had parrie, venison and pork salamis made last year and they were amazing.  I've shot a some nice mallard drakes, I've even got out there to knock over a few canada geese (made the silhouettes myself) and even bagged a black swan.  I go up to Wanaka sometimes (I'm based in Dunedin) and I was thinking about doing a jump shoot for quail while I'm up there, but something that really interests me after seeing some domestic birds around a farm while hunting goats and deer is wild Turkeys.  Does anyone know any farms in Central Otago that might let me on to hunt some in exchange for some paua, pork, and bacon sausages maybe?  Thanks, Ross.

I don't know the answer to your question but if you want to come up some time I can take you out on Ellesmere.  It's always hard hunting but is rewarding and you get to see a lot of birds flying past in the distance.

This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine.  Without my rifle I am useless, without me it is useless.

Haha yeah I heard that you need a dog....which I do not have....still can't hurt to go for a walk and try my luck aye.  Might have to stick to the ducks/geese if it doesn't pan out.

nah dont need a dog for quail but it certainly helps and get bigger groups to shoot at, I just used to wander through the prickly crap and find lots of single quail an hour id have plenty for a good feed for me and wifey.

as for the gobblers I used to chase them in patearoa area, just went door knocking and everyone would let you on but that was 10years ago so prob not so easy. also never had a nice eating 1 even younger birds were tough as hell.

Hey that's great to hear, I've never actually tried quail.  I'm really glad I've posted the question you guys have been very helpful already, thanks.  Yeah some birds just don't taste good, I really like canada geese but when it comes to feral geese I wouldn't waste the bullet on them I've never tried a bird so terrible!  Let's hope a turkey is better than that...

HI when paddock duck shooting around ranfurly, I usually saw a few mobs of turkeys wandering through the paddock while in my lay down blind. May be worth a door knock of two.
Cheers

Cheers for the ideas guys, I have no worries door knocking or cold calling because the worst it will get me is back to where I am now at square one haha.  Looks like I have to get out for a drive and some jump shooting next weekend!

Shot 12 turkey's a week out from the first of May, cleaned them up and had the first one 2 day's ago, bloody great, no strong taste or taint in the meat. Done in an oven bag and stuffed.
