Weekend Warrior. Auckland Alps.

Hey everyone just getting started on the Forum. Looking for someone to Bow hunt with/ learn from in the Auckland Area.

I'm 26 from Maryland, USA. I started shooting archery with my grandfather from about 11 years old. Shot both compound and traditional. I moved to NZ at 21 and had the urge to shoot again after seeing some videos on YouTube. I picked up the kit of a hunter gone back to rifle and am accurate out to 30yrds

I am in Auckland and wanting to go after my first Goat or pig on doc land here or in the Waikato area. I have a Permit for Mangatawhiri and the North Waikato reserves if anyone is keen for a wonder on the weekends? I'm open to other spots and suggestions as well.

P.S If you have some rabbit numbers you need down pm me. I'd like to make a jacket for my son's first birthday. I'd also like to eat them so, I'd like to avoid the neighborhood guys living off of gum a cigarette butts haha

Cheers Cool

Welcome to the country mate. Don't have anything much to offer but there are plenty of goats to shoot in the Taupiri ranges near huntley. You can also get them in any public land near Kawhia. Permits for everywhere are free so I'd take a look there. Just be aware that Kawhia is covered in supplejack so it's a fairly shit time once you get into the thick stuff.

Hey mate,

Fellow bowhunter of the same age, also Auckland based.
Don't have any local spots unfortunately but could be keen on a walk up Tangihua Forest (south of Whangarei) sometime or if youve since found somewhere local then there works too. Either way!

You won’t find much in Mangatawhiri without a dog.
I pig hunt in there occasionally.
Its thick supplejack.
No goats or deer there.

Looks like Mangatawhiri is all closed off now too or at least no longer on open permit

Hey Stovanovich, got my first goat a bit ago with the bow from 30m down hill. Great shot and clean pass through. I'm definitely to get out and do more.

by the look of that head you need some butchery lessons Grin

It is much better to Hit the Animal in the right place, with a Rifle you can shoot well, then to hit it poorly with a Large Calibre..John Nosler

If you head down south drop me a line.  Happy to point you in the right direction although I don't have any real red hot spots...

This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine.  Without my rifle I am useless, without me it is useless.

Bump. I've shot two more, in Rotorua looking to have a go near Auckland if anyone can point me in the right direction  of goats, turkey, deer, rabbit. Whatever tastes good😂

I'd like to get out with some one to get after some deer as well. Dont mind tagging along if I can learn something.

The butchering has improved 😁
