a hunt with rumpy

so yesterday morn i went into the hunter hills with dave for a morning hunt,,dave is a wee bit older than me and i made a mistake as to our approach,,poor man
we saw lots of wallys but refrained from shooting as our quarry were deer,,red and fallow
now here we were looking out over to the other side where ive seen both type of deer,,i spy a wallaby and tell dave to shoot it,,he thinks we will scare the deer but i say it will flush them,,two shots later the wally retreats to dense cover,,then he cant see the next wally victim and gives me the shot,,i miss the first one and figure it was high so aimed for low on his guts and he flops dead on spot,,hmm my finder says its tbr but every time when i shoot across there at a steep downhill angle the shots go high..
dave spots the next victim at around three hundred but i say if he couldnt hit it at 220 it was pointless trying for a further shot,,there you go he hit the damn thing Shocked
so its back to glassing and lo n behold at 262 yrds i spy with my binos a good buck hunkering down in amongst the matagouri n mingimingi,,now the fun begins
where is it les,can you show me the spot
no i cant see it
there if you follow the (anyway you get the point)
now this went on for a good half hour and in the end i was rolling around on a steep face cracking up badly and in the end i said if you cant see him you cant shoot him

back home i did my thing with the horses and rumpy turned up for our evening hunt
we venture up the hill and very soon spy a very nice buck way across the other valley so continue on to our spot where me n dave had seen the buck that morning from this side
no cigar but further out the hills did reveal a mixed of of fallow coming out for their nightly supper
we picked on a mob 7 hinds n mixture and up the hill it was till we go to a hundy n bit and as rumpy only wanted one i told him to shoot one for me too
on the first shot the yrlg dropped and the rest hoofed it right to our position but a wee bit lower,,im doing all sorts of noises and soon they do stop below us at a steep pinch and rumpy rolls the second one,,choice
a quick butchery and out with the torches to arrive back at the car at 7.20
rumpy was wrapped as the last hunt we did together we got back to the car well after midnight
good shooting rumpy

When I first began reading, I thought you were going to go into detail about the rifles used.  Grin
Good read anyway, have brought Headcase's attn to it, maybe he'll shift it.

Get as close as you can, then get a bit closer.

There you go Magic. Bloody technology aye.

So looks like I don't need to write a report but I will add that I moved to the South Island in May 2012 and although I have shot 4 tahr in that time the deer of the south have until now eluded me. I did lose a spiker in the 2017 roar which couldn't be found after losing the blood trail and have missed another deer and a couple of tahr in that time.
So yes Micky, after five years and 362 days in the south I have finally got the monkey off my back.
Thanks Magic and to everyone else who has shared some info or knowledge with me.

we should call all doc administered land as public then in time they might realize they serve us not their own pockets
