Info about taking fly rod / reel on plane

Hey guys,

I would love some tips / info on the best way to take a fly rod on a domestic flight. I was thinking to put the rod inside the pack as I guess it may get nicked otherwise. I understand it won't be allowed on carry on.

Also wondering if you need to take the line and backing off the reel if taking it on the plane with carry on. Brand new reel so I am quite protective over it, last thing I want is a dented spool.

Traveled between AU and NZ a fair bit and domestic here in Au with rods/reels.
Always take them carry on I don't trust them rough baggage handlers...
Mostly with Qantas and Virgin.

I have a hard case and put it in the overhead and reels in bag.
Customs just want to see that there is no dirt/plant materials is all I've ever been checked for.

Oh and put the hooks under the plane they will take them if you try to get them inside....

Cheers for that.My main concern was that I wouldn't be allowed to take it as carry on due to safety concerns, although it isn't much of a weapon in my hands. Nothing much feels threatened by me with a fly rod  Grin

Last time I took my fly rod on the plane they didn't let me take it in its tube as carry on,  a dangerous weapon they reckon,  could poke someone in the eye with it?!
Anyway,  that was about 5 years ago on AirNZ, not sure if the security guy was just having a crap day or whether they'd be  more reasonable about it now.

Was that international? Ended up taking mine on no probs (domestic)... security guy I talked to on the phone was very friendly and helpful, perhaps cos he was a fisherman also.
