New rifle goes for a walk

Took the opportunity to get in a trip with the new 6mm-284 before Christmas

Was bloody hot yet again, so the walk up to the bushline resulted in an afternoon nap at the bivy.
Creeks were dry and river lowest seen in years. Got up to go for a hunt just when the cloud decided to come down, then once up the hill, the rain started. So it was back to camp, and then the first heavy rain for a while began

next morning was more rain, supposedly clearing so slept and read a book
Bout 3pm it began clearing so headed uphill to check out other side of the range where it might be bit less cloudy.

some good areas of tussock

Checked out some spurs leading up from the bush edge, and come across this youngish hind at 250 yards feeding its way uphill.

Lost sight of her† immediately after the shot, but found her laying in the tussock, dropped† on the spot, through the shoulder. Bullet is 90 grain Accubond, seemed to do the job ok.
There was no fawn evident and she had no milk.

Another solitary hind started barking across the next gully, never moved until I left.

Not a lot of sign around, since the last 1080 drop last march.

Got back to camp on dark, and because I thought it would be an easy trip back out next day, finished reading a book at 1.00am.
Packing up at 11am, found I had no Leica Binos† Embarrassed

So after a bit of swearing it was off back over the range to see if they were where I'd got the deer. Sure enough, had left them behind
So 4 hours later I was back, picked up pack and headed home, which turned out to be a 5 hour trip, the last few hours down a river track that has more than its share of ups and downs

Nice one!  Cool I hope that my future trips could be one day described as walk-slept in-read the book-shot the deer-read the book-came home...  Grin

Wonderful.
Its good that the new rifle works.

Those are big tussock tops.
You put in the effort, you reap the rewards, eh.

I've never been up there.

CraigC, 90 gn Accubonds doing 3450fps.
This seems to get the problem of fouling more. Greg tried heap of bullet makes,† †ABs had the least copper fouling occurring,
105 gn Berger hybrids didnít have this problem, but bit fragile at close range, going to use them for longer shots. They seem to group very well, as do the ABs

I had fouling problems in my 7mm saum with Hornady interbonds with groups opening up after 4-5 shots until I tried the old school Sierra gamekings, much better groups and better kills as well.

Nice work TH, with so much of the ranges being 1080'd near wellington, certainly thins the areas out. Good you still getting amongst them!
