A heads up to anyone going to the Karikari peninsula over the Xmas holidays. A rahui will be in place at Maitai Bay from 20/12/17 - 1/3/20. The area will be a complete NO TAKE ZONE

These Rahui appear to be on the rise, already a couple in place in the last two weeks and talk about more in other areas .  Depends on what the reason is  and who put it in place.
In the case of the Rahui in the 16000 ha park up north it cant be enforced i believe as put in place by local iwi and not backed by lawmakers ?

For me - it is about respect. I remain conscious that my forbears colonised this country and dispossessed the indigenous people. For some people (including many posters on this forum), that was all so long ago that the history is irrelevant, and we are now (or should be) "all one people" and so Maori should have no particular or special rights.

I might (almost) go along with that argument if the effects of colonisation were not so obvious in the social statistics and the casual (and largely unconscious) racism that is still par for the course in modern NZ.

And there are certainly some abuses and ripoffs, in relation to "customary take", "rahui" kaitiakitanga and various other "cultural practices", and I wish there weren't.

But while Maori are still on the bottom of the heap, I feel a responsibility to do my (very little) bit to try to change that. So I respect rahui, call blatant racism when I come across it, and use te reo as part of my daily interaction with people and in correspondence.
