Just a tramp

Did a quick trip (as in days, not times) into Carkeek hut, to put away some hut materials flown in by JD from Amalgamated heli

Left roadend at 6.30am, From Holdsworth carpark, its upvalley and climbing to the tops then over Angle Knob
Photo below is of AK from Holdsworth

travel along the tops isn't to hard, only a few climbs

Heading down to McGegor bivv. Always a nice sight to see after a walk.
Only half way so far, carkeek Ridge is in the background. Route from here is down to bivvy, down McGregor ridge to upper waiohine, up river to park Forks, then climb carkeek ridge to the hut

McGregor bivvy.
Popular spot with hunters over the Roar. Was always a good spot, back in the day.
had lunch and brew and bit of a rest. Still 4 or more hours to go.

Got to the upper waiohine at Dorset creek junction. route down from bivvy is marked a bit, lot of wind/snow damage below the upper beech zone. smelt deer on way
The idyllic Upper waiohine near the Park Forks. Most remote part of the forest park

saw trout in the river on the way. route up carkeek ridge is fairly good, lot of marking and cutting by various groups

Got to carkeek at 4.30, bit knackered. JD picked up a party of trampers celebrating one members 88th birthday. just before I got there. Pleased the hut was empty.
Spent next day cutting wood and scrubbing hut inside. And recovering.

Next day, From carkeek headed to Arete Forks via cross country. Over carkeek ridge, down to Waiohine headwaters, up Tarn Ridge, down to Waingawa. No tracks. was an old cullers track back in the 60s, but totally overgrown now

Got to Arete Forks in the head of the Waingawa. Light rain all the way, but new Stoney Creek Stowit jacket seemed ok, only wet in the lower sleeves.

saw couple deer on the way. good weather to see them out feeding. was a slow trip, leatherwood isn't getting any less

next day, headed out to Kiriwhakapapa roadend down Arete gorge sidle track. . had lunch at Cow creek and out at carpark about 6 hours later.

will be heading back in soon, to check out the deer population with new rifle  Smiley

Wow - you should be putting a book together on your walks - your photos are really good.

I especially like that one of the Upper Waiohine because I tried to get there once and never did - got stuck at Powell when it fogged in and I completely ransacked that hut looking for cigarette butts as I'd quit smoking. Found old dried out f*g ends that were older than I was that I rolled in newspaper and three days later when I couldn't find any more - I came home and quit trying to quit.

T. H. you're an inspiration to us all.
I was going to say I hope I'm as fit as you are when I'm your age, but really I wish I was as fit and keen as you now!
There are a number of forum members whose reports I've learnt are always a rewarding read and yours are right up there.
Cheers for posting.

Awesome walk, and some good elevation dropped and gained. Good stuff TH. Reckon you could packraft out from the Upper Waiohine, or a bit too gorgy/lack of flow?
