How common is it to catch Kahawai in a river?

To my surprise I caught a Kahawai today (my first one) about 2 km inland from the river mouth. Is it common for Kahawai to go this far into a river?

actually its very common, many species of fish , transition from salt into fresh . I used to live in Hamilton and some locals regularly caught Kahawai, Mullet, and even flounder in the waikato river , in or around the town. Hamilton is over 100km from the river mouth at port waikato

Shocked Shocked

I stand corrected. I have only ever seen a single kahawai caught that i would of said it was possibly ? living in freshwater for a day or so.

I have seen flounder living in freshwater shingle riverbeds 30km ? away from the sea.

Here in the Kakanui river there are heap loads of yellow eyed mullets so I guess that is what drives Kahawai further into the river. To be honest I don't mind catching Kahawai in the rivers at all. They give a me a good fight and I am happy as landing one. But then again I am having fun catching mullets too Smiley
