Now there's a breed I've never really seen the need for.
Too unpredictable. Too excitable. Can't be trusted anywhere near kids.
Have seen a couple that had a strong hunting drive, but they tended to go off on their own missions and not help the other dogs, and target identification was not a strong point (which led to a .44 behind the ear).
Often seems to be the wrong people that have them as a fashion accessory.
Having said that I've seen a couple of pittys that grew old never having had bared a tooth in anger.

Hope your pup gets over it mate. 🤞

Can't argue with that.

Actually had a "Pitbull type dog" have a go at my heading dog yesterday also. I say "type dog" because I have only seen one genuine Pitbull imported from the U.S. Unfortunately for the dog I was testing a new high country boot and gaiter setup.  The Hiax K2 after three boots nearly took it's head off  Grin Grin Grin

Now I tend to arrive and have a look around the area I am running the dog to make sure your local Pitbulls are awesome hero isn't there.  But was caught unaware from this dog literally coming out of the trees.  It happens.

Cheers, Dan

That's a real shame mate, I hope your dog is ok. I know how angry I would be if it was my dog. Unfortunately due to their breed, they will generally be owned by people to look tough etc and they won't have a clue how to manage them.

The dog has been badly socialised and trained. Seen a real pitty which was extremely loving to its owners 2 young girls. Thats how dogs react when they have real training and love not made into some horror story.

Thats well said.

All dogs that are unsure in their social standing with other dogs may become aggressive to other dogs. It happens all the time, and as has been pointed out, not many people can deal with it. Its all a bit of a mystery why my loving pooch is being such a bitch.

Problem with Pitbulls is, instead of a bit of a ruffing up to the less agressive dog, and maybe a bit of blood being drawn, worst case a visit to the vets, the damage can be severe to deadly. Its unfortunate that overall the less gifted as dog trainers like to own pitbulls because of the reputation they carry with them. Sadly the combination is often disasterous.

Got a suspicion you didn't have the real article there.

My flatmate had a PB she got from the States, but I refused to have it here so she sent it to stay with her ex.
Then he got himself killed in an accident and the dog ended up here - and I grew quite fond of it.
She also had another dog that had come to stay, one I didn't know about - and a big hulking nasty tempered piece of shit it proved to be - my introduction as I held my hand out being a slash across my knuckles that went to the bone.
One day, and completely out of the blue it chomped on the back of the neck of the PB - this happening on my verandah while we were having a beer.
The noise was horrendous and I thought the PB buggered, so grabbed the 'missus to be', went inside and shut the door to leave them to it.
In the meantime my diminutive blonde (other) flatmate had found a pick handle and got stuck in - then I realised she was whacking the PB which had somehow turned it around and had the big dog down by the throat.
"She's gonna kill that dog if you don't do something" the love of my life said.
"f**k !" - so out I went and joined the tears, swearing, thuds and diminishing snarls of the dying dog.
No way could we get that little PB bitch off - I was trying to separate them with main strength whilst doing my best to avoid the pick handle blows which were actually bouncing off the PB's skull to absolutely no effect.
Eventually I grabbed it's tail and was pulling so hard it had stretched out like a wet rag, it's four legs completely off the ground. Shouting at the missus to open the door, she had no sooner done so when a particularly violent pick handle blow popped them apart and I fell back through the door, the PB flying over my head to crash against the wall on the other side of the lounge.
Slamming the door shut we suddenly realised the two of us were stuck inside with an extremely shitty dog and were having second thoughts when the dog quietly took itself under the stairs like nothing had happened, lay down and began licking herself.
Back outside I thought the big dog was dead - there was blood everywhere, on me, Blondy, all over the deck and splattered up the walls - but no, that f**king dog was still alive so we carried out to the car and she took it to the vet.
Going back in I thought I'd better look at the other dog and calling to it, it quite meekly came out and sat while I gave it a good looking over. With one eye swollen and blood red, puncture marks and rips around its neck and missing clumps of hair from its head and shoulders, I phoned up a vet friend only to be told she didn't want it in there - so I cleaned her up the best I could and she went back under the stairs.
A few days later she showed no signs of being in a scrap other than she favoured her tail which was obviously very sore and we spent endless time picking scabs out of her fur.

Despite me liking that dog I realised if it ever had a go at any of us there'd be not a lot we could do about it - so it went.
And so did Blondy, because I wanted no part of that other dog either - and she wasn't parting with it.

its amazing what a bucket of water or hose will do to break up scrapping dogs...not much use out and about but it sure sorts them out at home....

Cheers for that MD - I have heard that and might even have known it at the time, but I suspect in the heat of the moment when all that was going on there wasn't a lot of thinking happening.
All that was many years ago and when that big bastard thing snuffed it years later with a twisted gut, 'Blondy' brought it back out here and got me to plant it up the back. I put a pohutukawa over the damn thing and it's twenty feet high now.

I do have sympathy for Kane and his dog - twixt my saying I wanted the Pit Bull gone and its actual going took a bit of time and during that time it chewed up three other dogs.
One was a passing Lab that got away pretty lightly as I got on the scene quickly and the other two were a Corgi and Dachshund that transgressed onto our property.
By the time I got onto that, the Dachshund had been spat out and the PB had actually clamped its jaws around the barrel of the Corgi and was holding it upside down in the air. This was a dog almost as big as the one holding it. That little pit bull bitch had a jaw that seemed to dislocate like a snake - I've never seen jaws open so wide - astonishing.
Both those dogs survived - but were hurt quite badly.
She never barked, that dog, but when she took off on serious business she let out a high pitched whine I called the 'banshee wail' which got me moving right quick as soon as I heard it.

I'm pretty sure the dog had been used as a guard dog and I believe it was just doing here what it had been encouraged to do on its former place.
I will say she did learn very quickly and while she had opportunity, she never attacked another dog - just let me know she was contemplating it with that whine.
"It's okay girl, just passing."

Like I said, I got very fond of that little bitch, but her potential for mayhem scared me - I was sad when she went.

Huh? I am lost?

If you are chasing function over form there is a dog out there more suited to almost every task than a Pit Bull. Pointless for what mot people want, with the exception of trying to look tough.

He meant you weren't dealing with a real pity if it let you kick it and survived.  Grin
