Just grab a doc permit and you're good to go for most public land.  Good luck.

I don't know how much bush experience you have had but if you are a beginner a couple of good places to start might be.
1. Old Whanga road.
2. Moki track.
These are goats only which are easy to shoot. ( I don't bow shoot)
Both well worn tracks might be people around. But the beauty is head off track anywhere and as long as you don't go over and major ridge line it is easy to drop back to the rivers/track wherever you are. So if you are a beginner you can have great practice out there.
Shot my first goat out on the moki track great place, I don't know weather it is closed for lambing.

Find a local bowhunting club if there is one near you so you can get some practice in in a realistic setting and advice from guys who've made the same mistakes you're going to. NZ Bowhunters have a website too
