Go contact the local SAR group - they always wanting volunteers and most of them are hunters and by osmosis you will learn some very valuable skills around bushcraft navigation cooking etc - if you're lucky someone will invite you out hunting.

Probably a good start Maddoghunter Smiley
My names Bazza 25 years old dairy farming on rangatikei plains(whakatane) mad keen fisherman and am keen as mustard on hunting. Havent done any big game as prior to 3 years ago i was a townie and no one i knew went. been out possum and rabbits up until 5 years ago but wanting to get into deer hunting to put some meat in the freezer. looking for someone to go with and pass down some advice and knowledge and know the in the future in will be passed down again for someone that is where I am now. more than happy to just tag along for a walk, be the carry bitch etc just after some general knowledge. I have firearms licence and day hunt stuff(apart from gps and a gun in next month or so) Just a dead keen outdoors guy wanting to learn a thing or hunt about hunting to put some food on the table for the family.
Cheers

Trick is  not to return to places you have been taken too. Younger hunters have a habit of returning to spot x with there bros and thrashing it.

Sorry I'm no help too you. Too busy these days.
But I'd suggest joining local NZDA.
If that's not your thing, there's plenty of good country on your doorstep.
Perhaps ask Doc. Read what you can on here, heaps of really good learning to be had. Get out there, springs coming up, hunt the river flats dawn and dusk. Even better see if you can get access to bush fringes via a friendly cocky. Should be really good hunting over the 2 - 3 months. If you can get access via a farm that borders the parks, you'll have every man and his dog on here suddenly wanting to be your mate Wink

Hey Bazza 15 yea thats the big problem with some of us hunters, we,ve taken newbies & other mates to our hard earned hotspots only to find they go back there behind your back with their mates & clean it out! Its a shame there tends to be a ratio of 6 shitbags to one genuine buggers out there tends to determine the keeness of us to take new guys out

hello baz, im willing to take you along for a hunt, but im down in hawkes bay, if your down this way, or willing to come down for a weekend or meet somewhere halfway then you might be in luck. im not stupid enough to take you to my favourite spot x, but im certainly willing to put you onto the right track to being a hunter, and impart some pearls of wisdom, and add some wear to your boots. pm me
