Hunter from overseas, wander around the South Island

Greetings from the (nearly exact) other side of the globe.
I am a 24 year old hunter form Austria. I hunt since Im in legal age for hunting.

This year in April Im going on a five day Tahr hunt in the Canterbury region.

Besides of being a hunter I am a studying forestry and environmental engineering with focus on natural hazards (especially mass movements like shallow landslides or avalanches) in Vienna. Therefore I`m always curious to visit interesting tree stands (for a middle European the growth rates of pinus radiata is hardly imaginable) or sites where shallow landslides occur. When both of them comes together I`m even more exited to visit this place. So if you know such a spot on public access able land in the Canterbury region give me a hint (precious hints will be rewarded with beer).

As Im very interested in other hunting cultures, I would love to team up with some keen kiwi hunters. I take nearly all my hunting gear to New Zealand (only my rifle and a tent are missing). Of course I will pay my part of the incurring costs. I dont need to pull the Trigger by myself. If you need an additional meat hauler in your group, my external Frame pack and I are on your side. Normally I`m an easy going person, decent cook and experienced in hiking in alpine areas.

Thanks for reading.
cheers Corvus

To get a better impression of me here are a few pictures of my hunting block in Austria. I hope you enjoy.

Even though Austria is mainly mountainous, my hunting block is pretty flat, as I am living on the northern edge of the alps.

The main game species is roe deer.

Any roe deer enthusiasts in this Forum?

[Part 2]

We also try to keep the numbers of Hares, Pheasants and Grey Partridges up.

Therefore it is necessary to keep the number of foxes and martens down and work with traps all year round.

I also kind of like the hunting traditions in my homecountry. Therefore I started to Play Parforcehorn (a type of huntinghorn, tuned in B/Eb for the musicians under you) around ten years ago.

Hunting in a cultural landscape has its advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it is very pleasing

On other days quite dreary.

Therefore, I am already looking forward to hunt in New Zealand and to earn my meat through hiking and stalking to get a feeling of a more unaffected hunt. Where there is only the hunter and his prey.

It is much better to Hit the Animal in the right place, with a Rifle you can shoot well, then to hit it poorly with a Large Calibre..John Nosler

Grin I will take the hares to Austria for the sole purpose of breeding with my hares.

Joke aside, I had no idea until now, that beside rabbits, hares were also introduced in New Zealand. Hare hunting is a very interesting opportunity.

I will be in New Zealand from April 1st to April 17th. This is unfortunately not long enough to explore this beautiful country entirely but I will try to make the best out of my time in NZ.

If you come to Southland/Otago, let me know. I am a forest manager. We could go look at trees and then go hunting!

What airport do you fly out from?

Great post Corvus, -  I hope you had a great time in NZ.  Great to see how you hunt in Austria too.

I also wanted to thank the guys who made Corvus so welcome.

That was just bloody heart warming.   That is why kiwis are some of the most hospitable lot I have ever met.  Top blokes.  Thumbs Up Lads.
