I've looked a number of times now and just have to comment on your 'Karate Coot' photo.
Many years ago I had a cabin boat parked in the reeds at a place called the Lagoon on Lake Tarawera.
I would go down to work on that boat on a regular basis, so often the pukeko's and coot's got thoroughly used to me - I spent a lot of time watching them.
One morning I watched the mum or dad coot hammer a fuzzy red ping pong ball sized baby on the head until it was dead, then swim away. Then startlingly, it revived and another coot scooted across and dealt with it.
It disturbed me watching that, so I came home and looked it up and found it common practice among coots.

The thing I most remember though was a clout on the front of my boat which had me looking up instantly.
Still etched in my mind was a harrier hawk in the clutches of an upside down pukeko as they sailed across the front of my boat to splash down in the long reeds, whereby the pook immediately let go and scarpered - leaving the hawk wet and disheveled.
That coot of yours looks just like my pook did - have never forgotten it.

yes I think a hawk would find its self in a tricky situation being attached to a puke.
its amazing the things we see when we just stop and watch what nature is doing around us .
I never get tired of it.
thanks for your comments  mate.

Good stuff once again Tony ,,,, so kewl to see a little NZ wildlife after a day in the wilds of Canada ,,,, not that I'm complaining about being over here . Here in northern Ontario the bird life is not as prolific and way hard to photograph unless luck is on your side.
