well just got back from the range, the Speer 85gr boattails were a wash, didn't hit the A4 paper at 100m, so put 4 sheets together and still didn't hit them, Shocked gave them up as a lost cause, everything else shot well.  speed was slow at 2576 with 26.5g of CFE.223, guess I will pull rest of bullets.

80gr sierra blitz with CFE.223 26.5g x5   @ 2695  s/d 22
                                             27g    x10 @ 2740 s/d 23

85gr Sierra varmint   CFE.223 26.5   x5  @ 2685 s/d 10
                                             27g    x10  @ 2750 S/d 11

75v-max                  CFE.223  28.5  x10   @2944 s/d 21

The 85gr sierra flat base shoot very well, 2 three shot groups at 200m at 26mm and 35mm, very good groups with the 75gr v-max, 80gr blitz and 85gr sierra varmint at 100m, 12 to 20mm,  1/2 to 3/4 for 5 shots, with mangospeed removed.

Looks like CFE.223 is not giving the same speed as benchmark with these bullet weights, but its hard to argue that's any real problem, with a couple 1"and 1.5" groups at 200m.  Cool
rifle seams to favour flat base bullets,
Will retest next days off, with a bit more powder (CFE) on the 80-85gr Sierra bullets. hoping for another 100-150 fps.

It is much better to Hit the Animal in the right place, with a Rifle you can shoot well, then to hit it poorly with a Large Calibre..John Nosler

Cheers, yes it's my fav rifle that one. Made it out of an old 223 Target rifle that had a home made stock. Stock on it now was a TM deal, with a bit of TLC from me. Very much a South Island barrel length tho'  Wink

You could do the same with your 222, just get it rebarreled and put the original aside for originality purpose if you wanted to return it back to 222. Robbie at Gunworks has the reamer but you will be limited to the shorter profiled bullets due to the Sako mag length, unless of course you don't care about a bit of bullet jump. I found that the Sierra HP in 75gr & 85gr are just right with about 0.5mm jump.

Final load testing done yesterday with 27.8gr of CFE223 & 85gr HPBT Sierra gave 2880fps average with an ES 4, so I'll stick with this  Smiley Outright speed is not essential for a 300m rifle and I think this isn't bad for a 223 case & 85gr pill.

That's good speed there Mathias, I have a few more loads, done up with CfE and 85gr sierra flatbase, let us know how they work on game, I test mine in next ten days or so.
Be interesting to compare, what primers and brass are you using?

I have just applied for export and import permits to get my Cooper to NZ.
Hopefully all done, before I fly back for six weeks holidays 1st November. If not back in January.

Using Remington brass & CCI BR4 primers. Brass is once fired from a heap of cheap UMC 50gr HP I ran through my 223. I'm surprised the BT are running as good as they are as the barrel really prefers flat base from past experience. Will trial on animals closer to xmas unless I can get out a bit earlier.
Good to see the Cooper is coming to NZ, such an awesome looking rifle  Cool

Well had the cooper, out again yesterday, final few loads checked and decide, what I am going to run with. Before bring rifle to NZ, permits to Export/Import now in place.
sticking with the
          85gr serria CFE.223 27.5gr for 2760fps        63.3mm OAL
          75gr Serria HP with CFE.223 28.5 for 3000fps.  58.85mm
          65gr v-max with H335 26.5g, for 3150fps,   63mm Oal
                               or Benchmark 27g for 3160       "
All above loads, are same point of impact at 100m.

Tested the 58gr v-max a bit higher charge
24.5 H4198 for 3230fps extremely accurate x5 at 0.31" and x5@.0.36" with mangospeed on, at 100M, sadly two inch lower that sights at 100m,
25gr           for 3288fps,  0.56 for 6 shots.

Took the 85 and 80 serria out to 200m, with the 85gr and 65gr v-max. both pretty close to same point of impact,
shot a very good group at 200m with the 80gr, z5 into 1.5", due to cold conditions, my shoot had started to get worse, the odd flyier.

Put a Few shots threw My cooper single shot, M21 6x47 Remington, New Nosler .222mag brass, Br-4 and CFE.223 28gr and a 75gr Serria hollow point, 0.23 four shoots, @100m,  Smiley
and 70gr Balistic tip, CFE.223, 30gr four shots into 1.1 at 200m. Cool
Just wish it was a repeater, not a single shot.

cold miserable conditions, -5 and windy, took the cooper 6x45 for a hunt yesterday afternoon, no deer seen.

Its a typo, should be 60.30mm, still a bit off room, magazine lenght is 61.5mm or so.
Yea getting a few loads, to same point of impact, has been the goal, gives a bit of flexablity, but rifle puts everything, on the same vertical axcess, about a 70mm spread between the low 58grain v-max and high 85gr soft point at 100m.

Hi takbok, I'm running an L461 Sako with 23"Trueflite barrel 1:10
I'm mostly using 75gr Sierra HP bullets behind Hodgson H335.

What charge weight are you running?

I have played with 26gn of H335 and 75gr Vmax and Sierra HP pills. They both worked nicely and grouped in the same location.

Out of interest I had some 105gn Amax pills lying about and I threw some H414 under them. This is what happened when I poked them out to 200yards. Only loaded the 3. Wish I had put more effort into the shots, I was using my hunting scope (VX6) on 12x.

Most of my loads will be under the 85gn however.

The barrel is a 1in8" twist and 18".

Just checked my book and it's 27.5 of H335 with a 75gr Sierra.

I chrony'd my 75Vmax load today.

2875 fps woth 26gns of H335. It's shooting okay but I know this rifle can do better. 26gns is pretty conservative. I'll go back to the drawing board with this sometime and work it up a bit hotter.

Started playing with 55gr Nosler BT pills today as well. Trying to get some fps.

H335 28gr 3074
H322 27gr 3066
Benchmark 27hr 2965 (ADI BM2)
2206H 28gr 2956. Wont be able to get too much more of this in the case, it was compressed.

This is out of the 18" 1:8 twist barrel.

H335 has plenty of wiggle room in the case. The rest were near the top. No signs on too much pressure there.

I've loaded 5 with H335 and 5 with H322. Will see how they go when I get a chance.

Also keen to pick up some VV133 or 135.

I'm liking your results there 6x45

I've always wanted a 6x45 and Mathias has been a bad influence!

I looked for a Sako Vixen action last year to modify but when i bought a Sako A1 in great condition i left it as is but i've since bought a second hand Remington ADL in .223 so that will be my donor rifle.

I'm wanting to run a shorter 18-20 inch barrel with 75 gr projectiles... keen to know what your thoughts are with bullet speeds etc???

What is your rifle?
