We've just been generously offered a Bark River knife valued at $200.00 to offer as a prize in a raffle for those forum members who donate to the Foundation judicial review.
here's a pic of the prize.
If you want to donate to the foundation, go to the donation registration form at the link below and make sure you tick the check box that says "FishnHunt member?"
Make sure you put your email and name in the form as well.
The kiwibank donation account number is on the form. Don't forget to fill the form out AND then do the deposit online to kiwibank
Competition closes on 31 August 2016. The raffle is open only to FishnHunt members The draw will be done by LNIRDF chairman, Gordon George
forum members that donated prior to this raffle being set up, can be included in the draw. If you didn't show your forum login name in the online form, you will have to PM me, and your name will be added to the draw. all a bit messy, but cant think of another way to sort it.
For those that are interested. There was an earlier query on here asked if how funding was progressing The Lower North Island Red Deer Foundation have raised approx. $13,000 towards funding the Judicial review of DOCs last WARO permitting, of the Lower North island forest parks. We expect to have to raise another $12,000 approx. Additionally, The Lower NI clubs have contributed to the legal fees, as has Natex NZDA
This is a precedent setting challenge that will benefit hunters nationally re the WARO concession process, and DOCs obligations to consult and also justify their decisions regarding WARO
Many thanks to everyone here who has contributed already. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
PS, once the Foundation gets a few things sorted, there will be opportunity for hunters to become members of the foundation

This is fantastic work. Every hunter who feels frustrated and powerless against unilateral decisions being made by DOC should support this with a bit of a donation.
It only takes a little donation from a lot of people to make a big difference.

Spot on BC, i think a lot of us feel this way, 'like how do we do something about this' so it's bloody good to be able to contribute even a little bit to something actually legitimate / doing something about it. Keep it up guys, and look foward to more updates. Cheers

+1 my sentiments exactly. And thanks Derek and committee for the efforts to date - exemplary - hunters becoming unified = shocking concept for DOC to ponder = might influence them to be a bit more honest in their general treatment of us and in their policy-writing.

C'mon all you hunters, chuck in a few dollars to help clarify the value, to the recreational hunting public , of our big game on public land. I'll never have to go hunting there myself, but I've donated twice, and I'm a pensioner. So chip in everybody and let's see what the outcome is.

Donations from forum members has picked up, thanks heaps guys If we are successful, the LNIRDF believe the decision should see a fairer consideration of DOCs obligations to consider recreational hunting and to consult, in future when renewing concessions for WARO deer recovery. Senior DOC managers have already apologized to hunters, in not consulting regarding major changes they made that negatively impacted on rec hunters.
DOC intends to run an extensive consultation NZ wide on the future management of WARO and the respective roles of the deer recovery industry and recreational hunting in deer management. I gather external facilitators will be engaged to run this process.
Along with the Ruahine deer working group DOC facilitates currently things appear to be changing for the better

And so without having to read everything, In short what are they wanting to get as a resolve?? Back to the original WARO or No WARO?? Hamish
Hi Hamish The current legal challenge is aimed at getting DOC to return to the original WARO permit conditions and area open to them.. The Judicial review can only seek that.
term recognition of recreational hunting built into DOC strategies and policies. (Deer as a Game Animal). Part of this, is agreement on what levels deer densities should be kept at, and how that should be managed. This will remove the ongoing uncertainty on what DOC will decide re deer control and the attempts to remove hard won exclusions of WARO
What will the Ruahines looks like in the end? Rec hunting without the effects of WARO removing deer, where that activity isn't justified..
One option is a Herd Of Special Interest, managed by recreational hunting. That's a decision the rec hunting fraternity
The working group seem to agree that the outcome could become am model for other places in NZ The need to control impacts from deer on the conservation values will always be the bottom line, but its becoming clear theres agreement that deer and conservation have to exist together, and its pointless to expect that ever single native species needs to be saved from deer. Some of the juiciest native plants will never regenerate widely, unless deer are almost exterminated. DOC have been positive and pretty open to options, and on the working group. fair way still to go, yet though

I've seen the give away Bark River knife. Brand spanking new from the States, and its a real ripper.
All you need to do is give a small (or as big as you like) donation to the Foundation before the end of the month and you are in for the draw. Its restricted to this forum, so you have great odds on winning.
Go to the top of this thread for instructions on how to donate, and a pic of the knife.

Ive just moved to Wellington, so have been doing a bit of researching and saw this LNIRDF action. Pretty cool to see a formal organised approach! Put some money through, hopefully aim to join the club in a few weeks, and get out exploring some of the Tararuas soon. Cheers, James.

parallel to this court challenge, discussions with DOC Ruahines on Deer Management is looking promising. Essentially, a Deer Management Plan will be prepared, that is "enabled" by Policies in the regional CMS (conservation management strategy)
getting the right policy in the CMS is critical, but its looking hopeful
so future changes in deer harvest (say increased shooting by WARO) will be subject to a "test", where there has to be criteria met by WARO. part of which, is, does the deer population "exceed management intervention densities".
That assessment being based on valid deer abundance surveying Plus other "tests".
the onus will be on rec hunters to keep deer numbers to the levels set.
This is a major change to department policy, in places that have been hammered by WARO for the last 40 years. The days of the free for All WARo may be dissapearing
The Game Council has also been instrumental in helping get this to happen, and to DOCs credit, so have they enabled it to happen,
Still issues to resolve of course
