Arete Forks Hut restored

The exNZFS volunteers finished the Arete Forks hut in the Tararuas, back to its original Forest Service design

Installing the chimney. this was assemnled in town and flown in on strops

Completed fireplace, complete with fire. No better way to cook in the hills, beats wood stoves hands down Smiley

Interior of the, back at orginal design specs. an old NZFS Tilley lamp helps with the lighting a lot

Finished hut

Funding for this project was obtained from the Outdoor Recreation Consortium, the Tararua Aorangi Rimutaka Huts Committee and also some funding support from local DOC.
Prior to this project, there was only one of the original 6 bunk culling huts still in original design. all of the other 15 or so in the Tararuas had been modified, and a couple replaced.

around the whole country, there were about 440 4 and 6 bunk huts using the forest service standard design. very few are still in their original state, the rest being modified, some beyond recognition as the old S70 huts

A great job guys, Its a lot of years since I hunted the Tarras. Even more years since being at Arete. Seeing the hut looking like an original makes me think that maybe I should wander down that way for a few days. Good stuff!!! Wink

I've got a very old Hurricane lamp if you need one for further hut refurbishments. The one before the Tilley. So nowhere near as bright. Its got 'NZGovt' bead blasted into the glass, so about as authentic as you can get Smiley

Thanks for the work you and the team have put in, Arete forks is in good hands.

Nice to see open fire back in action. Wink, It makes my profile pic look a little dated.
