In case this hasn't been covered, end of April Epro on behalf on TB free nz are dropping 1080 through the Hauhungaroa ranges around Te hoi encompassing a very large area including waihaha, bog Inn, waihora etc.

We just had a good hunt in there and animal numbers are about 2 years off getting back to their pre 2011 populations, but once again back to square one.

Ni deer repellant is to be used from my understanding.

Deer repellant was being used in some areas was the email I read. Would be interesting to see which areas tho.
If 1080 had such a devastating impact on deer there would be none left after 30 + years of 1080 in the Pureora. Instead a reasonably healthy population with lots of successful hunting. I see the sow rate is incredibly low, perhaps deer mortality will be low too. Personally I'd like to see some robust science on deer mortality & modern 1080 techniques with and without repellant. At least hunters can then make informed lobbying based on fact.

Didn't Pureora get rained on last year? I'm pretty sure the whole area was done June last year - the top end surely was !

Hopefully. I'm not saying it will wipe the deer out, just puts a big dent in their population again which will take a few years to recover to levels that people would consider successful to hunt.

Also frustrating is the general releases don't show the monitoring results , I'd like to see the stats for interest sake.

A lot of areas around it were but not the Forest itself. The Ecofx guys were doing the ground ops where 1080 couldn't be used. Their view was there are next to no possums and th has been eradicated from the area so there wouldn't be anymore 1080 drops. I guess someone else decided just one more for good luck🙄.

It's not a DOC operation but there should be info in the pesticide summary where you apply online for a permit. I just spent several days hunting in there and as usual it has some of the best bird life I have seen in the central North Island. It can't be all about deer. Smiley

Genesis 27:3 Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.

And so it bloody should with the millions it's had spent on it and a bait station on every second tree.

It doesn't mean they have to keep hammering it. It's getting a bit over the top.
