Gday fellas , the search bar wasn't real helpful here and I know these questions have been asked a few times so go easy on me lol.

I'm coming over for a week on sat morn and was looking for the best site for long term weather for say the Twizel /mt cook through to Arthurs pass areas ?
Also what's the best sandfly deterrent?

Cheers

Hi Joefish,
Weather wise I've used either the metservice backcountry forecasts or yr weather.
www.yr.no
Yr seems to be pretty accurate considering its from Norway, well at least when I have used it for Mason Bay forecasts. Simply type within the search bar a feature of the local area you are going to - for eg say Red Stag hut in the Godley etc etc and most places should appear with up to a 9 day forecast.

In regards to the pesky sandfly I've had great success with Bushmans spray - yes I guess the deet isn't something thats good for you, but hey I only use it once in a blue moon. Hope this helps.

Hardin the f### up cream works, just takes a few decades ti kick in  Grin
Many Coasty types swear by the fifty, fifty baby oil & Detol.

Bugger, Ive been telling people Diesel and Detol. No complaints yet.

Seriously, for a quick trip fast fix, Bushmans Plus insect repellent works pretty good. You can buy it in all Pharmacies and hunting shops here.

If your hunting up Mt Cook/ Lake Ohau way you will need it but the Sandflys are classed as light to moderate. Nothing like over on the West Caost.. If you get over the hill a bit in the Tekapo, Macaully, Godley area you wont need it. No sandflys in those areas. We shot them all.

Wear trousers not shorts, long sleeved shirt and you have solved 90% of the problem.  Take gloves and a head net for when you sit and glass and you have solved the other 10% of the problem.

That work well for me Massive until the back of my shirt came untucked. Was well bitten before I realised, and then itched for a month every time I sat down and something rubbed my back Sad Sad.  Us Aussies are a bit soft where sandflies are concerned. No conditioning like you Kiwis

You need more exposure to them until your body learns to not react.  Strip nakkid and walk around slowly without waving your hands and it should sort that problem right out.

If you are too chicken for that or not confident on the sexuality of your hunting mates and a bit worried that the back rubs will come with a happy ending then take antihistamines.
