Just wondering if any of you avid fisherman or boaties have observed any evidence of or heard fishy tales of the rodent plague that gave rise to DoC spending millions of our/your (taxpayers) dollars on poison in the past few months??... or did DoC get em all.... ? Shocked

Not in the South .... but there is a rodent plague in Arthurs pass national park and a few other isolated areas on the west coast and nelson areas (mainly rats)

There were several totally unnecessary 1080 drops in Southland Fiordland and Otago!

I think the options on your poll are a little to similar to draw any conclusions from it.  Cheesy

I saw two live mice in six days on my last trip around Murchison and Reefton. I also saw half a dozen dead rats, but that was about it.

I don't remember seeing ANY flowering beech trees the season before, in the dozen or so beech forrested valleys I visited.

Depends who you talk to... some say it is... some say it's not, I know of a few guys with commercial interests in the recreational fishing sector and lodging stating it's "exploded" all over the South Island!... Definitely not in the lower North Island back country. Funnily enough Murchison was one of these "plague" regions...

There is certainly some great double figure fish round and no doubt some of them are mouse feeders, as have seen the proof myself (distended anus dead giveaway), but a "plague" or "mouse explosion" Meh, not sure I'd go that far (but I could be wrong!), and talking to a few guides round the south it seems they think the same. Like you, I have seen a hell of a lot of Rat activity this year!... but still early(ish) days... it might happen yet!

It certainly has in the Arthur's pass, lewis pass and isolated pockets of the west coast without a doubt.

Yes, yes and yes again. The mice got going about 5,6 weeks ago. Also seen plenty of stoats(7 in one day). And with it have noticed a lot more fishing pressure and heaps of spooky shy big fish that need a break but won't get it.Fished a once secret creek the other day, don't think there was a fish under 8 pound in it but unfortunately someone probably had the best fishing day of there life before us. All the fish were doggo and spooky and plenty of bootmarks about. Plenty of helifishing with guides and clients getting about. In years gone past the plagues went publicised like this one.

I caught a 3-4 lber in the Hurunui which I kept - had a bloated stomach which held 6 mice. Released a bigger fish which must have had a least a dozen.

Even where the plague exists the money seems to have been wasted as mice can taste 1080 poison (unlike rats) which only resulted in 25% mortality under ideal laboratory conditions as found in a study by DoC here: http://www.doc.govt.nz/Documents/science-and-technical/drds306entire.pdf
