Boat went back in the water yesterday after antifoul and stern gland repacked so haven't been fishing myself for a while but word is around the marina that its hard fishing right now but a few big snapper are turning up for patient people willing to invest in time and burley.

Its kelpie time, adjust your fishing to suit.

Bite times will be short, but fish still have to eat

Noises, Aha's, Gannet Pin, Horn Rock, Little Barrier.

Or closer to land, Ti Point foul, Leigh Reef, East Coast Bays foul, Wellington Reef etc will all hold periodically.

Burley the crap out of them

Full tit. Nothing else.

Hmmm..Burley, Bronzies and plastic Sit-On-Top ...too much excitment, FYM  Grin
Most of my fishing now ( 99%) is drifting and Soft Plastics or trolled lures..burley for me is wasted.

Just finished cuttin fish.  Not quite Hauraki Gulf area but me mate and i had a good evening at Pakiri.  13 snaps most of them 4 to 8 lb
and no bloody cooters!  There were a few fish showing on the sounder so we didn't put any burley out, seemed to solve the cooter problems I have been having lately

Got this nice snapper today, 5.5Kg gutted, strange shape, Massive head short but very fat body.

In the Tiri channel too so right in the comp area.

I gave Savage exact coordinates in case I don't make the comp.

That photo doesn't give an accurate impression of the shape of the fish - It was a 10lbr's body attached to a 20lbr's head. Odd looking thing that's for sure!

I'll expect to be seeing some bigger fish weighed in at this years comp with the change of dates/time of year.  Cool

and get what you've always got.

I had the smoked Backbone for lunch today, The vertebra were almost fused with tough gristle between instead of the bubble of spinal fluid.

The fillets were very thick certainly it ate well. I have been eating the smoked head too and it was quite fatty (just as I like it Smiley.

Gidday Salmoner, just got back from another great trip around Kawau with my Son in law and his Father managed to release a 12lb and another 15Lb snapper but after 2 unsuccessful attempts to release it was forced to bring home a 17lb one.

Edit to add this is well within range of the competition and there seems to be a few big snapper about Kawau and Tiri area right now. Its the early spawning fish which tend to be big females and they are suckers for a well presented softie. The one in the photo was successfully released.

The Thames firth and the mussell farms are real hit or miss at the moment. Talking to a bloke and they'd been (13 of them) on fishing barge for the day and come home with the sum total of 6 fish!!!, and yet another bod they knew and his son had been out for 2 hrs in the firth and come home with limit of nice snapper from 4 to 7lbs!!!
Look for birds seem to be the way to go! Wink

I was out a week ago. Fishing was slow to start with but lots of burley and it built through the day. While there were a few good fish around the majority of them were 30 to 35cm fish but plenty of 40cm fish too so was worth the trip.

i have been struggling, fished for 4 hrs one evening last week and got 1 Snap about 10lb just on dark, been bloody hard of late in my patch any way. The week before two of us fished off Pakiri, 9 man hours of fishing for 4 pannies and got smashed by cooters, got 4 to the boat and would have lost 10 sets of gear Sad
Might be better after this SE blow......i'm hoping anyway Undecided

yeah those weeks of constant westerlies/sou westerlies made for hard fishing up here on the coast also.
the ocean at present is boiling, huge swell and filthy water pouring out of the river mouths.
im really looking forward to the first chance to get out as the fishing should be awesome after this Cool

Beautiful day out on the Gulf today caught a few pannies but mainly swam and went for a walk on Tiri. The Gulf did turn up a surprise though as it usually does, a sea turtle swam past the boat poked its head out of the water to check us out then swam off towards Kawau.

First Turtle I have seen in a lifetime on the gulf though I have heard of them being seen before.

Went out for my first paddle since the FYM forum comp, beautiful early morning. Only worked Narrow Neck to rough Rocks for a couple of hours, 20.5 degree water, loads of small fish, even caught the biggest spottie I have ever seen on a trolled lure!
There is a perfectly good, almost brand new sea anchor hung up under the Rough Rock marker  ( not mine! )

managaed 3 pannies on sunday. nearly got cut in half by a yacht  "PLAY TIME" in the rakino channel. If i hadnt have shouted out he would have collided into us. Commented as he went past our bow good spotting. Fwit. Was tempted to cast my line into his sail and reply. Good catch.

Just had two days at Coro---- got a feed but the fishing quite hard at the moment. Water still not very warm--17.3 up to 18.2 yesterday. Zillions of boats about, 300+ cars and trailers at the Waikawau ramp on Sat, 150+ yesterday on way home, no wonder the Maori's decided it was a "nice little earner and wanted itsigned over to them!!! And that little Findlayson arsehole gave it to them Angry Angry
Don't know when the handover is, can't be far away now!!  Angry Sad

Went out to Pakiri and set the longline. Two sets, over change of tide. Only 3 small snapper all released. A hard days fishing in perfect weather. Another person set their longline out and only managed one legal snapper.

Seems quite slow and tough at the moment. Any closer beaches to Auckland that people have tried putting a longline out on! Murawai swell is always too big for a kayak haha

i always find that long lining is good early on in the season round auckland and after christmas it just gets worse and worse. You are better off using rod and reel as there are so many small fish around. and then using techniques to target the bigger fish and lure fishing.

I came back with a limit bag off my kayak last Saturday morning, Army Bay . Patchy fishing, lots of snmall ones in small pockets. Some guys came in with only one or two, otheres with none.  More fun softbaiting than long lining!  Wink

took an army of softies out.. gulp and zman... gulp  in the grey grub  has always been my go to, didnt fail me this time either... tried the gulp  white glow one only to be bitten in half on one bite.... the 3"minnows did ok for a few but tail get bitten off also... for the zman coconut ice 4" streaks i think they are.. long curly tails on them.. this got the second biggest fish on the day 50cm and in the motor oil same result 56cm snaps... bleeding banana did get any.. so no pattern in colours to follow... my mate also caught on the SLAM brand in the take off like the nook chook.  Smiley

We were out on the charter vessel Joint Venture from Te Kouma yesterday evening, got plenty of snapper biggest was 6 kgs, still lots of undersized fish but more than enough for a feed. We were fishing around the farms off Wilsons bay.

Thanks - it was mainly the little kingi I was wondering about. One on cut bait isn't all that unusual, but I thought that two was worth asking about.
